My Statement

"Let me emphatically say that I am not anti-Facebook (Fleecebook), anti-smart phone, anti-Microsoft, anti-Apple, anti-Google or anti-Internet. I do believe, though, that the consumer is being ripped off of his privacy, identity and purchase history. We are being herded into a Facebook corner where what we "Like" and where we go physically and on the net will be scrutinized and sold numerous times to actually corrode and erode our culture while tempting us only with convenience, high tech and flashing video screens. The unsuspecting consumers need to be aware..." - Gary Lapman

Age Related Anti-Social Illness

Are you too old for social networking?   All my kids are concerned about when they say that we don't need a Facebook page is whether we look at their pages or not. There are specialized sites for boomers and the over fifty crowd, as well as one for tots. As friendships develop, certain comments or messages are only intended for certain people, so that kind of communication does not belong on a social networking site.  Perhaps the younger crowd does not realize that....  What IS too old, anyway?  They keep saying that age has slipped 10-15 years (like 70 is the old 60), so it must be all in our mind...

So Apple would like you to believe that they ARE creating location tracking information, but they are NOT EVER going to use it.  This isn't information that would ever be used to find your stolen spyPhone or spyPad since all you would need is their current location, not where they have been.  Why is it okay for devices to collect data (without the user's knowledge or consent)  and provide it to whomever pays ?

As an experiment in absurdity [and to prove that the vetting process for membership is flawed], we decided to get a email account for our chihuahua.  I first tried with Google and I was not successful.  Microsoft's Hotmail was simple.  The next step was to get Max a Facebook account.  I wanted this experiment to be relatively devoid of any links to us, as though Max was doing it independently.  I had to pick a last name for Max, that wasn't mine.  First I tried "Max Chihuahua", but Facebook balked.  I adjusted it to "Max Perro" and fudged a bit about his birthday, and Mr. Zuckerberg's prize software looked the other way, while Max got his own page. [This certainly doesn't appear to adequate to keep youngsters off, for sure.]  I added pictures, favorite movies (like "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" and "Legally Blond") and decided to poke my daughter to befriend Max.  An innocent gesture that got a not-unexpected response.  She opened a chat with me and complained about the absurdity, but wouldn't befriend him.  She didn't want her friends on Facebook to know that she had him for a friend.  Then, this morning, I went on to Facebook and looked at her page.  She wouldn't be Max's friend, but she complained about the friend-request to her Facebook friends!  [Why do I try to understand kids?]  I will continue to add "fluff" to Max's site to see if the information gets to the wrong places...

3. You visit sites that list reasons you know your addicted to Facebook.

4. You take pictures for the sole reason of tagging them on Facebook.

5. You have several Facebook friends that you've never actually met in person.

6. You're one of the few people who actually use Facebook chat.

Apple Knows Where You Are...And Who Else?

So once again, information on your iPhone or 3G iPad is being shared without your permission.  Apple is keeping track of your location, in real-time. When will this ever end?

I got my truck back today and it was ready when they said.  It was clean inside and out.  The repair was better than new and I was just ecstatic.  I thought about writing an email to the manager, but did one better.  I sent an email to Edhat and all the readers will know what a good experience should be.  I hope they get some extra business from my sharing...

Two doctors opened offices in a small town and put up a sign reading:
"Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Psychiatry and Proctology".
The town's fathers were not too happy with that sign, so they changed it to:
"Hysterias and Posteriors".
This was not acceptable either, so they changed the sign to:
"Schizoids and Hemorrhoids".
No go, so they tried...
"Catatonics and High Colonics".
Thumbs down again, so they tried...
"Manic-depressives and Anal-retentives."
STILL not good, so they tried...
"Minds and Behinds".
Unacceptable again, so they tried...
"Lost Souls and - - - -holes".
Still no go. Nor did these...
"Analysis and Anal Cysts",
"Queers and Rears",
"Nuts and Butts",
"Freaks and Cheeks" or
"Loons and Moons" work either.
They finally settled on...
"Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Odds and Ends"!

Cumulus or Nimbostratus?

It's bad when you are reading a technical article or even a murder mystery and you have to look up a word to find out what they are talking about. It is very good to expand your vocabulary, but not at the expense of the storyline or technical description. One of the big advantages of online reading is that many words will be hyperlinked and can easily be clarified and return to the original text is easily accomplished. This would be very handy in online textbooks. While that is a big advantage (among many others); it may not be enough reason to completely abandon printed pages. There is still a casual elegance involved with reading a newspaper in an airport terminal or a paperback on a beach that can't be easily fulfilled with an e-reader, laptop, tablet or desktop. Until the investment is well under $100 for an e-reader, I won't consider it disposable or risk leaving one on my beach blanket, while I take a swim. I believe that e-readers will drop in price, while tablets will continue to add features and probably remain at approximately the same price for a long while. Laptops and desktops will probably continue to drop in price because of lackluster sales. They will still be needed by developers and other creators of content, as the e-readers and tablets are really for content viewing. Where does that leave the computer industry ? I think we are going to be doing more and more with our personal computers, but they will probably be on the "phone" platform. They will project keyboards on our desk, and screens on the wall. We will be developing content by accessing a cloud on a wireless network.

An elderly patient gets hearing aids from a doctor. After short time, he meets the doctor again.

Doctor, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased."
Patient, "Oh, I am in a funny situation now. I haven't told my family yet. I just sit and listen to their conversations. In a month, I've changed my will three times!"

The following is an important announcement...
Police warn all clubbers, party-goers, and unsuspecting bar regulars to be alert and stay cautious when offered a drink from any woman. A new date rape drug on the market called "beer" is used by many females to target unsuspecting men.

The drug is generally found in liquid form and is now available almost anywhere. It comes in bottles, cans, from taps and in large "kegs."

"Beer" is used by female sexual predators at parties and bars to persuade their male victims to go home and have sex with them. Typically, a woman needs only to persuade a guy to consume a few units of "beer" and then simply ask him home for no strings attached sex. Men are rendered helpless against this approach.

After several "beers" men will often succumb to desires to perform sexual acts on horrific looking women to whom they would never normally be attracted. After drinking "beer," men often awaken with only hazy memories of exactly what happened to them the night before, often with just a vague feeling that something bad occurred.

At other times these unfortunate men are swindled out of their life's savings in a familiar scam known as "a relationship." It has been reported that in extreme cases, the female may even be shrewd enough to entrap the unsuspecting male into a longer term form of servitude and punishment referred to as "marriage."

Apparently, men are much more susceptible to this scam after "beer" is administered and sex is offered by the predatory female.

Please! Forward this warning to every male you know. However, if you fall victim to this insidious "beer" and the predatory women administering it, there are male support groups with venues in every town where you can discuss the details of your shocking encounter in an open and frank manner with similarly affected, like-minded guys.

For the support group nearest you, just look up "Golf Courses" in the yellow pages.

A doctor on his morning walk, noticed an old lady sitting on her front step smoking a cigar, so he walked up to her and said, I couldn't help but notice how happy you look! What is your secret?"
"I smoke ten cigars a day," she said. "Before I go to bed, I smoke a nice big joint. Apart from that, I drink a whole bottle of Jack Daniels every week, and eat only junk food. On weekends, I pop pills, have sex, and I don't exercise at all."
"That is absolutely amazing! How old are you?"
"Forty," she replied.

And you thought you had a bad day....

DIY: Trump's Comb-over!

Dropped off my truck for body repairs this morning and walked a block to the car rental agency.  I showed up early at the body shop and didn't have to wait, but when I got to the car rental, there were about ten people ahead of me.  Those of us waiting in line were actually amazed that everyone was polite and patient.  The attendant was doing as best as he could under the circumstances.
Give me a break!  How in the world are supposed EVER take Trump seriously, when Time Magazine publishes the how-to on Trump's comb-over ?

Which doesn't really surprise me, 'cause they all look exactly alike. Its not like they're gonna meet a better-looking penguin someday."

A father put his 3 year old daughter to bed, told her a story and listened to her prayers which ended by saying: "God bless Mommy, God bless Daddy, God bless Grandma and good-bye Grandpa."

The father asked, 'Why did you say good-bye Grandpa?

The little girl said, "I don't know daddy, it just seemed like the thing to do." The next day grandpa died. The father thought it was a strange coincidence.

A few months later the father put the girl to bed and listened to her prayers which went like this: "God bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy and good-bye Grandma."

The next day the grandmother died.

"Holy smokes" thought the father, "this kid is in contact with the other side."

Several weeks later when the girl was going to bed the dad heard her say:

"God bless Mommy and good-bye Daddy."

He practically went into shock. He couldn't sleep all night and got up at the crack of dawn to go to his office. He was nervous as a cat all day, had lunch and watched
the clock He figured if he could get by until midnight he would be okay. He felt safe in the office, so instead of going home at the end of the day he stayed there, drinking coffee, looking at his watch and jumping at every sound. Finally, midnight arrived, he breathed a sigh of
relief and went home.

When he got home his wife said "I've never seen you work so late. What's the matter?"

He said "I don't want to talk about it, I've just spent the worst day of my life."

She said, "You think you had a bad day, you'll never believe what happened to me. This morning my golf pro dropped dead in the middle of my lesson!"

What does Facebook have to with me Liking?

This really gets me riled!  Do some people not read articles unless they have to "like" them first on Facebook?  Apparently so, since there are people writing about the affect Facebook is having on our culture and society- AND it isn't good!  What if your favorite widget is made by a company that doesn't have Facebook presence (just presence of mind, probably)? Is that a reason NOT to buy that widget anymore? How shallow of our culture and society!  One could say that "resistance is futile...", but I'm a believer in the Social Bubble.  As soon as the NEXT-BEST-THING comes along, Facebook will fall- HARD.

So Facebook users, in most cases, appear surprised that their revered automated director of social relations (i.e. Facebook) would turn on their trusting involvement with the biggest privacy invasion in history just to make money!  Trust in me (for free); this is just the beginning.  Remember when they wanted to register gun owners, and the owners were worried that when the Russians came, they would know where all the guns were.  Well, put this in another arena, a similar arena....

Last night, on the pretense of a dinner invitation, I was surprised with a poker/birthday party.  It was a hoot... and sure was surprised.

Almost Expired

They should be ashamed!  The Postal Service makes (apparently) no efforts to track the origin of the pictures that are put on stamps, as this week it was determined that the picture that they used for Lady Liberty was NOT of the statue in New York harbor, but the imitation in Las Vegas.  I guess the Postal Service is an example of an imitation gubmint entity!  Let us have tremendous confidence in the people that run this gubmint entity- NOT!
Erring on the side of being conservative, I don't pay much heed to dates on foods or drugs.  Most of the time, the drugs have been used up in-time for the expiration dates.  If you had decided to be thrifty and buy the COSTCO size of aspirin, or Tylenol-equivalent, or Ibuprofen, of course, it would really depend on how many aches and pains you have had since you bought it.  I always figure that drugs start to lose their efficacy as they approach and pass the use-by date.  Food, on the other hand has dates that say how long it can be for sale on the shelf in the store.  Then there is another date.  Let's say that the date is on bread.  If I ALWAYS toast the bread, I really don't care how hard it is, but I don't like that pesky green mold.  When I see the mold, out it goes- but I continue to eat it as toast until then.  My wife, though, tends to eschew anything that is EVEN close to that date- either side.  So how about milk?  If it tastes okay, why not continue to use it ?  If it sours before or after the date, give it to Chuck!
I is so unfortunate, but I am at the mercy of, of POLLEN!  Having taken one decongestant pill this morning that granted me only momentary composure, I have taken yet another, in the hope of relatively normal existence between sneezes....

My Next Life Backwards
I want to live my next life backwards!

You start out dead and get that out of the way right off the bat.

Then, you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day.

When you are kicked out of the home for being too healthy, you spend several years enjoying your
retirement and collecting benefit checks.

When you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day.

You work 40 years or so, getting younger every day until pretty soon you're too young to work.

So then, you go to high school: play sports, date, drink, and party.

As you get even younger, you become a kid again.

You go to elementary school, play, and have no responsibilities.

In a few years, you become a baby and everyone runs themselves ragged keeping you happy.

You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in luxury, spa-like conditions: central heating, room service on tap.

Until finally... you finish off as an orgasm.

I rest my case.

A minister was seated next to a cowboy on a flight to Texas. After the plane was airborne, drink orders were taken. The cowboy asked for a whiskey and soda, which was brought and placed before him. The flight attendant then asked the minister if he would like a drink.

He replied in disgust, "I'd rather be savagely raped by brazen whores than let liquor touch my lips."

The cowboy then handed his drink back to the attendant and said, "Me too. I didn't know we had a choice."

Thank goodness it is finally over...

So the week is finally over and I feel a great relief.  It was hectic at work, and hectic at home. Next Monday my car goes into the shop for work to replace the back bump, as I was rear-ended last week.  It is utterly amazing how much progress we have made with regard to automobile design.  Used to be that cars were so heavy and their bumpers were so massive that all the energy from an accident was transferred to the occupants.  Now the y make the cars a bit lighter, but the bumpers are designed to crush and not return to their original shape.  The energy of the impact is therefore absorbed.  Unfortunately, instead of a scratch on the bumper, it has to totally be replaced- at someone's great expense.  This fellow that hit me was not interested in even seeing the damage (or course thinking that is was very minor), so he is going to be very surprised when his insurance gets the bill for a replacement bumper and rental car.  It should be in the neighborhood of $1300-1500.  Shocking!

A man was being tailgated by a stressed out woman on a busy boulevard.

Suddenly, the light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.

The tailgating woman had to slam on her brakes. As her tires screeched to a sudden stop, she hit the horn. Then she started screaming in frustration over her missed chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup in the process. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her half-open window. She stopped her cursing and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer.

The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, finger printed, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said: "I'm very sorry for your experience. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you, and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'What Would Jesus Do?' bumper sticker, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian Fish emblem on the trunk."

"Obviously I made a mistake, but for some reason I assumed you had stolen the car."

Half of Facebook for $1000

Remember in the movie Social Network that Zuckerberg was constantly borrowing money for server equipment or other items necessary to get Facebook up and running?  We really don't know how true that part of the movie was, or if it is, whether those loans were ever paid back or not.  If they didn't get repaid, what is that loan worth today?  This guy in New York claims that he owns a portion of Facebook because of one of those loans.  Zuckerberg better have a receipt that he paid this guy back or the company is in deep doo-doo.
Sometimes, when I haven't received many jokes from friends, I have to peruse the discussion forums or joke sites.  Unfortunately, most them are pretty old.  It seems like most people are so preoccupied with the news that they aren't as funny as they have been...

A man walks into a bar with his dog and orders two glasses of whiskey. He proposes a toast and both he and his dog empty their glasses.

The girl behind the bar is surprised and asks, "Can your dog perform other tricks?"

"But of course", the man answers, "he can even gratify a woman."

Anxious to know more, the girl leads the man and the dog into a little room above the bar. She undresses, and full of expectation, she lies down on the bed.

The dog looks at her and does nothing.

"It's always the same thing with you!", the man then shouts at the dog, "Okay, I'll show you how to do this one last time!"

Bought and Paid For

Why is it that politicians continue to raise taxes to cover bad decisions on their part?  Why is it that a multi-billion dollar company, General Electric, pays no income taxes?  The politicians are in bed with the corporations and they get what they want AND we have to pay for it. Sounds great for them, but it really doesn't sound fair.  Even though life isn't fair on many areas, EVERYONE (including corporations) should pay their fair share.  Unfortunately they have been deciding what is fair.  I suppose it IS cheaper to pay for a politician than it is to pay for taxes. When is Obama going to penalize companies that cut jobs in favor of outsourcing overseas ? When is Obama going to reward companies for creating new jobs here ?  What companies OWN Obama ?  Doesn't it seem reasonable, since we saved Wall Street, that they should kick-in on our salvation ?  Would it be reasonable to assume that Wall Street owns Obama and Congress ?

Fun With Words
My mother wears hearing-aids. When Pavarotti performed at Lady Diana's funeral, she remarked, "Why are they letting him sing after he chased her through the tunnel?"

At the end of a long and probably very boring meal (at a formal dinner), (British Prime Minister) Macmillan turned to Madame de Gaulle and asked politely what she was looking forward to in her retirement.
Quick as a flash the elderly lady replied: "A penis."
Macmillan had been trained all his life never to appear shocked, but even he was a bit taken aback. After drawling out a series of polite platitudes, "Well, I can see your point of view," "Don't have much time for that sort of thing nowadays" It gradually dawned on him to his intense relief that what the old girl had actually said was "happiness."

Yay for LA and the Space Shuttle Endeavour

Well, I certainly can tell you that the day after birthdays aren't as bad.  I felt REALLY old yesterday and worthless.  Today I am re-energized and ready for battle with youngsters.... Bring it on!

That is going to be one fantastic spectacle when the shuttle lands atop the 747 at Long Beach Airport, and then the shuttle gets transported via truck and trailer to the California Science Center in Los Angeles.  The traffic will be backed up for many miles as this is NOT going to be easy...

A LEGAL QUESTION...

The Birthday Blues

To me.
4/11/11.  Today is my birthday.  I feel less important than I have in a long time.  It is probably a normal  feeling- now all three of my kids have concluded that they can ignore me, after all I REALLY am an old fart now.

Someday, they will be deciding my disposition and before that, what home I get to live in and whether my bedpan is heated before I get to use it...  Oh hell, I'm not dead yet, and I still got a few years to make 'em pay!

I guess I just have the Birthday Blues...
The Singularity is coming, and in the mean time the "machine" is using us to make it happen!

So it appears as thought Zuckerberg has won again in the courts and the Winklevoss twins will have to settle for the $65 million that was the original settlement.  Perhaps now they will "Unfriend" Zuckerberg on their Facebook pages....
I've always wondered what would happen if you found a way to make gold from lead, but the instructions were to difficult to follow.  I am trying to use a new software application at work but STRUGGLING to get what the instructions are telling me.  To justify their existence, the implementers have obfuscated and made the instructions ambiguous enough to cause heaving and eventual emesis.  I sure hope it works well after it is finally configured...

The real truth they don't want you to know
Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart only good for so many beats, and that it... Don't waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No pain...good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food are fried these day in vegetable oil. In fact, they permeated by it. How could getting more vegetable be bad for you?!?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for your figure, explain whale to me..

Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is shape!
Well... I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"

AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

A couple of women were playing golf one sunny Saturday morning. The first of the twosome teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next
hole. Indeed, the ball hit one of the men and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in evident agony.

The woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. She said,

"Please allow me to help. I'm a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow me", she said earnestly.

"Umph, ooh, nnoo, I'll be all right, I'll be fine in a minute." he replied breathlessly as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch.

But she persisted, and he finally allowed her to help him. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, she loosened his pants, and put her hands inside and began to massage him.

She then asked him: "How does that feel?

He replied: "It feels great, but my thumb still hurts like hell."

Our Fault

Yesterday was a fun day planned with my family, basically for my birthday which is tomorrow.  We went to Oxy to pick up Tori and then to Lacy Park to have a picnic.  Then it was on to Huntington Gardens in Pasadena.  We visited a number of gardens but I really enjoyed the Desert Gardens.  The cacti were wonderful.  My favorites were well displayed.  The Stapelia were everywhere.  One was in bloom and the flower had captured a fly.  The sun was peaking between clouds and caught the Golden Barrels just right to really show off their size and color.  Later we went to see the art displays in the mansion.  The big attractions were Blue Boy and Pinky.  They were worth seeing as one never knows if we'll ever get back here.  We had thought we had been here almost thirty years ago, but the docent explained to us that we were really thinking of the Arboretum in Arcadia. [That was where Fantasy Island was filmed.]

The day continued without incident until we went to an early dinner at Buca DeBeppo's.  We has a heated discussion at the table about smart phones, privacy and "down time".  It was decided that technology has become part of the younger generation's lives, while we, the Boomers, were the enablers.  No amount of questions regarding the ginormous values places on Google, Facebook and Twitter and why, could convince the youngster's that it was based on what they could steal from the users and sell to the advertisers.  All I can say is that the Social Bubble will burst; I believe it and you all should as well.

So does anyone have a definitive explanation about the over-valuing of the social and search sites ? When I bring this up to my kids, it is though I know nothing.  They tell me that they have not ever known anything except the technologies that they have available today.  Unfortunately, what they don't realize is that those technologies come with a price.  NOBODY would put that much effort and money into a project to access and steal copies of your private data and catalog your habits UNLESS there was WAY MORE money to be made!!!  It is OUR FAULT that the people of today (younger than Boomers) depend so heavily on technologies.  After all, we ram a new one down their throat as often as we can- and then shift the paradigms to cover it.

A father walks into a restaurant with his young son. He gives the young boy 3 nickels to play with to keep him occupied.

Suddenly, the boy starts choking, going blue in the face.
The father realizes the boy has swallowed the nickels and starts slapping him on the back. The boy coughs up 2 of the nickels, but keeps choking.

Looking at his son, the father is panicking, shouting for help.
A well-dressed, attractive, and serious looking woman in a blue business suit is sitting at the coffee bar reading a newspaper and sipping a cup of coffee.

At the sound of the commotion, she looks up, puts her coffee cup down, neatly folds the newspaper and places it on the counter, gets up from her seat and makes her way, unhurried, across the restaurant. Reaching the boy, the woman carefully drops his pants; takes hold of the boy's' “privates” and starts to squeeze and twist, gently at first and then ever so firmly.

After a few seconds the boy convulses violently and coughs up the last nickel, which the woman deftly catches in her free hand. Releasing the boy's testicles, the woman hands the nickel to the father and walks back to her seat at the coffee bar without saying a word.

As soon as he is sure that his son has suffered no ill effects, the father rushes over to the woman and starts thanking her saying, "I've never seen anybody do anything like that before, it was fantastic. Are you a doctor?”

"No," the woman replied, "I'm with Internal Revenue Service".

Excerpts From "A Cat's Guide To Human Beings"

1. Introduction: Why Do We Need Humans?

So you've decided to get yourself a human being. In doing so,
you've joined the millions of other cats who have acquired these
strange and often frustrating creatures. There will be any number
of times, during the course of your association with humans, when
you will wonder why you have bothered to grace them with your
presence.

What's so great about humans, anyway? Why not just hang around
with other cats? Our greatest philosophers have struggled with
this question for centuries, but the answer is actually rather
simple:

THEY HAVE OPPOSABLE THUMBS.

Which makes them the perfect tools for such tasks as opening
doors, getting the lids off of cat food cans, changing television
stations and other activities that we, despite our other obvious
advantages, find difficult to do ourselves. True, chimps,
orangutans and lemurs also have opposable thumbs, but they are
nowhere as easy to train.

2. How And When to Get Your Human's Attention

Humans often erroneously assume that there are other, more
important activities than taking care of your immediate needs,
such as conducting business, spending time with their families or
even sleeping.

Though this is dreadfully inconvenient, you can make this work to
your advantage by pestering your human at the moment it is the
busiest. It is usually so flustered that it will do whatever you
want it to do, just to get you out of its hair. Not
coincidentally, human teenagers follow this same practice.

Here are some tried and true methods of getting your human to do
what you want:

Sitting on paper: An oldie but a goodie. If a human has paper in
front of it, chances are good it's something they assume is more
important than you. They will often offer you a snack to lure you
away. Establish your supremacy over this wood pulp product at
every opportunity. This practice also works well with computer
keyboards, remote controls, car keys and small children.

Waking your human at odd hours: A cat's "golden time" is between
3:30 and 4:30 in the morning. If you paw at your human's sleeping
face during this time, you have a better than even chance that it
will get up and, in an incoherent haze, do exactly what you want.
You may actually have to scratch deep sleepers to get their
attention; remember to vary the scratch site to keep the human
from getting suspicious.

3. Punishing Your Human Being

Sometimes, despite your best training efforts, your human will
stubbornly resist bending to your whim. In these extreme
circumstances, you may have to punish your human. Obvious
punishments, such as scratching furniture or eating household
plants, are likely to backfire; the unsophisticated humans are
likely to misinterpret the activities and then try to discipline
YOU. Instead, we offer these subtle but nonetheless effective
alternatives:

· Use the cat box during an important formal dinner.

· Stare impassively at your human while it is attempting a
romantic interlude.

· Stand over an important piece of electronic equipment and feign
a hairball attack.

· After your human has watched a particularly disturbing horror
film, stand by the hall closet and then slowly back away, hissing
and yowling.

· While your human is sleeping, lie on its face.

4. Rewarding Your Human: Should Your Gift Still Be Alive?

The cat world is divided over the etiquette of presenting humans
with the thoughtful gift of a recently disemboweled animal. Some
believe that humans prefer these gifts already dead, while others
maintain that humans enjoy a slowly expiring cricket or rodent
just as much as we do, given their jumpy and playful movements in
picking the creatures up after they've been presented.

After much consideration of the human psyche, we recommend the
following: cold blooded animals (large insects, frogs, lizards,
garden snakes and the occasional earthworm) should be presented
dead, while warm blooded animals (birds, rodents, your neighbor's
Pomeranian) are better still living. When you see the expression
on your human's face, you'll know it's worth it.

5. How Long Should You Keep Your Human?

You are only obligated to your human for one of your lives. The
other eight are up to you. We recommend mixing and matching,
though in the end, most humans (at least the ones that are worth
living with) are pretty much the same. But what do you expect?
They're humans, after all. Opposable thumbs will only take you so
far.

Rear-ended

So who has the best retirement and health benefits in the world, our Congress and President, of course.  By serving only one term, they are covered for life.  There is absolutely no chance that they would give that entitlement up to experience the same benefits (?) that the average working stiff gets.  Also, when the gubmint has to shut down because Congress is NOT doing their jobs, who gets rewarded, Congress, of course.  They will get paid whether the gubmint is open for business, or not.

Yesterday evening, my wife dropped off her car to get new "tars" (tires) and a "lining" (alignment).  I picked her up and then headed home. On the offramp from the freeway, I got into the right lane so I could turn to go home.  There was still a car in front of me and the light was red.  The car turned right and I inched up so that I could see the traffic.  The light was still red, but I couldn't see because the car in the next lane was so far forward, so I inched up a bit more.  Just then the car behind me plowed into me.  Meanwhile the light changed to green and I proceeded to turn right and safely pull off the road.  The perpetrator followed my example.  I got out of the car to survey the damages and then checked out the perp's vehicle.  I proceeded to his window and suggested that we exchange pertinent information such as insurance and driver's license.  He said, "Is there any damage?".  I invited him to come outside the car and look at it, but he declined.  He dug them out and I wrote all the information down, as well as his car's license number.  I asked him to wait a minute and I would write down all of my information for him.  He declined and said he was in a hurry and sped off.  I was blown away at the guy's attitude.  My wife thought that he might be inebriated, but I couldn't tell- especially since he wouldn't get out of his car.  His car had a heavy steel-tube brush bar on the front which actually caused the damage.  There wasn't any damage to his vehicle.  I guess it is way more to expect "common" courtesy from him after an accident that he caused.  I would also expect that he isn't a COURTEOUS drive one the road either.

Idol was shocking last night.  There are only nine contestants left.  They are all great. They are not all great at everything they do, though.  Depending on their strengths, they appeal to different types of watchers.  More importantly, the actual voters that keep contestants on the show, or not, are usually the teeny-bop set [i.e. young girls] that vote numerous times each week.  I never vote, but I understand that when you put this task in the wrong hands that you will not like the results.  Perhaps leaving it TOTALLY up to the voting audience is the wrong choice.  Not making the totals public is probably a good idea.  There shouldn't be any hard feelings.  On the other hand, this is a talent contest.  A singing contest.  If a guy singer is judged by his good looks or sex appeal, then he will get more votes from the teeny-bop set.  Girl singers have numerous problems competing.  Unfortunately, the worst is getting the teeny-bop vote...

When asked why such a big password, she said that it had to be at least 8 characters long.

"Why does Sea World have a seafood restaurant? I'm halfway through my fish burger and I realize, Oh my God... I could be eating a slow learner." - Lynda Montgomery

An Italian, an Irishman and a Chinese fellow are hired at a construction site.

The foreman points to a huge pile of sand and says to the Italian guy, "You're in charge of sweeping."

To the Irishman he says "You're in charge of shoveling."

To the Chinese guy, "You're in charge of supplies."

He then says, "Now, I have to leave for a little while. I expect you guys to make a dent in that there pile." So the foreman goes away for a couple hours, but when he returns the pile of sand is untouched.

He says to the Italian: "Why didn't you sweep any of it?"

The Italian replies in a heavy accent, "I no gotta broom, an' you tella me dat de Chinese'a guy supposa bringa da supplies, but he disappear and I no finda him."

Then the foreman turns to the Irishman and asks why he didn't shovel.

The Irishman replies in his heavy brogue, "Aye, that ye did, but I couldn't get meself a shovel. Ye left the Chinese fella in charge of supplies, but I couldn't fin' him."

The foreman is really angry now, and storms off looking for the Chinese guy. He can't find him anywhere and is getting angrier by the minute.

Just then, the Chinese guy springs out from behind the pile of sand and yells...

"Supplies!!"

WARNING: OLDER MEN SCAM
Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it.
A 'heads up'... for those men who may be regular customers at Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, and even Wal-Mart. This one caught me totally by surprise. Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.

Here's how the scam works:
Two nice-looking, college-aged girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts (It's impossible not to look). When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say 'No' but instead ask for a ride to McDonald's. You agree and they climb into the vehicle. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet.

I had my wallet stolen October 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also November 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th & 27th, and very likely again this upcoming weekend.

So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take advantage of us older men. Warn your friends to be vigilant. Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the dollar store and bought them out in three of their stores.

Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe's, to Home Depot, to Costco, Etc.

Please, send this on to all the older men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in the afternoon.)
