My Statement

"Let me emphatically say that I am not anti-Facebook (Fleecebook), anti-smart phone, anti-Microsoft, anti-Apple, anti-Google or anti-Internet. I do believe, though, that the consumer is being ripped off of his privacy, identity and purchase history. We are being herded into a Facebook corner where what we "Like" and where we go physically and on the net will be scrutinized and sold numerous times to actually corrode and erode our culture while tempting us only with convenience, high tech and flashing video screens. The unsuspecting consumers need to be aware..." - Gary Lapman

Tea Partiers Are Not Rejoicing

Sarah Palin got some bad news. Even though her daughter moved to Arizona, they don't want Sarah to run her 2012 campaign from there.  "Help us send a strong message that Arizona should not be a stepping stone for extremist politicians and their radical agendas."  Looks to me like a wake-up-call for the Tea Partiers...

How to Please Your I.T. Department
1. When you call us to have your computer moved, be sure to leave it buried under half a ton of postcards, baby pictures, stuffed animals, dried flowers, bowling trophies and children's art. We don't have a life, and we find it deeply moving to catch a fleeting glimpse of yours.

2. Don't write anything down. Ever. We can play back the error messages from here.

3. When an I.T. person says he's coming right over, go for coffee. That way you won't be there when we need your password. It's nothing for us to remember 700 screen saver passwords.

4. When you call the help desk, state what you want, not what's keeping you from getting it. We don't need to know that you can't get into your mail because your computer won't power on at all.

5. When I.T. support sends you an E-Mail with high importance, delete it at once. We're just testing.

6. When an I.T. person is eating lunch at his desk, walk right in and spill your guts right out. We exist only to serve.

7. Send urgent email all in uppercase. The mail server picks it up and flags it as a rush delivery.

8. When the photocopier doesn't work, call computer support. There's electronics in it.

9. When something's wrong with your home PC, dump it on an I.T. person's chair with no name, no phone number and no description of the problem. We love a puzzle.

10. When an I.T. person tells you that computer screens don't have cartridges in them, argue. We love a good argument.

11. When an I.T. person tells you that he'll be there shortly, reply in a scathing tone of voice: "And just how many weeks do you mean by shortly?" That motivates us.

12. When the printer won't print, re-send the job at least 20 times. Print jobs frequently get sucked into black holes.

13. When the printer still won't print after 20 tries, send the job to all 68 printers in the company. One of them is bound to work.

14. Don't learn the proper term for anything technical. We know exactly what you mean by "My thingy blew up".

15. Don't use on-line help. On-line help is for wimps.

Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up. Michael O'Conner looks around and asks, "Oh, me boys, someone got's to tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?" They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be
discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse. "Discreet??? I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me." Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares, "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home."
"Tell him to drop dead!", says Murphy's wife.
"I'll go tell him." says Gallagher.

Into a Belfast pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he'd just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut, and bruised, and he's walking with a limp.
"What happened to you?" asks Sean, the bartender.  "Jamie O'Conner and me had a fight," says Paddy.
"That little O'Conner," says Sean, "He couldn't do that to you, he must have had something in his hand."
"That he did," says Paddy, "a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin' he gave me with it."
"Well," says Sean, "you should have defended yourself. Didn't you have something in your hand?"
"That I did," said Paddy, "Mrs. O'Conner's breast, and a thing of beauty it was; but useless in a fight."

Brenda O'Malley is home making dinner, as usual, when Tim Finnegan arrives at her door.
"Brenda, may I come in?" he asks. "I've somethin' to tell ya".
"Of course you can come in, you're always welcome, Tim. But where's my husband?"
"That's what I'm here to be telling ya, Brenda. There was an accident down at the Guinness brewery"
"Oh, God no!" cries Brenda. "Please don't tell me."
"I must, Brenda. Your husband Shamus is dead and gone. I'm sorry.
Finally, she looked up at Tim. "How did it happen, Tim?"
"It was terrible, Brenda.. He fell into a vat of Guinness Stout, and drowned."
"Oh my dear Jesus! But you must tell me true, Tim, did he at least go quickly?"
"Well, Brenda, no. In fact, he got out three times to pee."

Mary Clancy goes up to Father O'Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears.
He says, "So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"
She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night."
The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?"
She says, "That he did, Father."
The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?"
"He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun...' "

A drunk staggers into a Catholic Church, enters a confessional booth, sits down, but says nothing.
The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention, but the drunk continues to sit there.
Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall.
The drunk mumbles, "Ain't no use knockin, there's no paper on this side
either."

Facebook Envy?

First things first: Let me recommend that you review one of the "Great Things That I've Saved" at the links to the right.  The link brings up pages of good stuff, as in the latest billboards (something we don't have much of in California- not at all in Santa Barbara) from Detroit.

Addressing the psyche, researchers have found that our own self-esteem is being eroded by having a Facebook account.  In the past we could only guess as to how much fun or how many friends somebody had, but now it is blazoned across the screen- rubbing-it-in so to speak.  You may have Facebook envy!  While this really doesn't have anything to do with Facebook, per se, the process of elaborating on the screen, each of the events (or lack of) in your life.

Yesterday I had an appointment to see the urologist for a prostate exam. Of course I was a bit on edge because all my friends have either gone under the knife or had those pellets implanted. The waiting room was filled with patients. As I approached the receptionist's desk, I noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who looked like a Sumo wrestler. I gave her my name, and in a very loud voice she said: "YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE, YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"
All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at me, now a very embarrassed man.
But as usual, I recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice, I replied: "NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE, BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS."
The room erupted in applause!

1. Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggert have written an impressive new book. It's called... 'Ministers Do More Than Lay People'
2. Transvestite: A guy who likes to eat, drink and be Mary.

4. My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash and it is gone.
5. The only time the world beats a path to your door is if you're in the bathroom.
6. I hate sex in the movies. Tried it once. The seat folded up, the drink spilled and that ice, well, it really chilled the mood.
7. It used to be only death and taxes now, of course, there's shipping and handling, too.
8. A husband is someone who, after taking the trash out, gives the impression that he just cleaned the whole house.
9. My next house will have no kitchen - just vending machines and a large trash can
11. Definition of a teenager? God's punishment...for enjoying sex.
12. As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point the wrong way.

Two elderly ladies had been friends for many decades.. Over the years they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.
One day they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me....I know we've been friends for a long time.....but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is.' Her friend glared at her. For at least three minutes she just stared and glared at her.
Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?'

Worst Security Threats of Facebook

The options in Libya are many, but the options have "consequences".  What can Obama do given that direct military intervention is off the table ?  One option that is not covered is covert capture of Gadhafi, just short of assassination.  Could this be pulled off?  What would the "consequences" be if the mission is discovered and fails?  Meanwhile the people of Libya beg for help....
So once again elaborating on the worst security threats presented by Facebook..... Why do my kids think that they are not affected by these and they can't get caught with their pants down?  It is already happening every day as people are losing their vitals to those leeches that take over their respective persona.

I just read that HBO is going to make a movie about Sarah Palin (what a waste) with Julianne Moore in the lead [What happened to Tina Fey- oh this ISN'T a comedy....  I'll reserve judgment on that].
Optrectomy: The surgery performed to sever the muscle connecting the optic nerve to the asshole. It removes your shitty outlook on life.

A defense attorney was cross examining a coroner. The attorney asked, "Before you signed the death certificate had you taken the man's pulse?" The coroner said, "No."

The attorney then asked, "Did you listen for a heart beat?", and again the coroner said, "No."

Then the attorney asked, "Did you check for breathing?", and again the coroner said, "No."

"So when you signed the death certificate you had not taken any steps to make sure the man was dead, had you?"

The coroner, now tired of the brow beating said, "Well, let me put it this way. The man's brain was sitting in a jar on my desk, but for all I know he could be out there practicing law somewhere."

For the old guy's 100th birthday, the nursing home attendants chipped in and got him a hooker.
The sexy blonde showed up in his doorway and purred, "I'm here to give you super sex!"
He replied, "I guess I'll take the soup!"

Buying Gas? LOL...

Much flack is coming down on Obama for not doing something in Libya.  I asked myself what was the best action that I could come up with.  If he orders that a no-fly zone be created over Libya, he will have to strategically bomb their radars.  This would be looked at as a US action, not NATO and would be "frowned" upon by the other Arab states.  Libya might declare war on us...  When there is a NATO action to take place, why doesn't one of the other members carry it out ?  I certainly would be easier for France or UK or even Italy to carry out a mission than us.  We are already stretched thin (no thanks to them).  Wouldn't it be easier to take out Qaddafi? Perhaps, but we would still be considered "interfering".  One of is sons or adjutants (just as bad) would probably assume the lead, anyway.  It would have to be a total regime change.  Consequently, in spite of the people of Libya suffering (and dying at Qaddafi's hands); it is still probably best to do nothing, currently (sadly).  One would have hoped that another Arab state would have stepped up by now, but they have such a low regard for the common people....

It is now reported that Facebook is getting into the movie streaming business.  Zuckerberg has was too much information on each of the Facebook members.  Now he will also know what movies they like and what ones to recommend.  Also, all your friends will know what you like.  Warner Brothers (their partners) will also have the opportunity to use that information to sell you souvenir crap to go with the movie rental.  Next they will determine that I need a pizza and beer to go with it and just have them delivered!  We won't have to LIVE our lives anymore and make our own decisions; Facebook will do it for us.  Of course, they will have to collect fees for this service, which means they will get their hands on our charge card numbers, too!  WAY TOO MUCH DATA IN ONE PLACE!  I'll stick with PayPal for my online transactions.
Nuff said....

A firefighter was working on the engine outside the Station, when he noticed a little girl nearby in a little red wagon with little ladders hung off the sides and a garden hose tightly coiled in the middle.

The girl was wearing a firefighters helmet. The wagon was being pulled by her dog and her cat.

The firefighter walked over to take a closer look. 'That sure is a nice fire truck,' the firefighter said with admiration.

'Thanks,' the girl replied. The firefighter looked a little closer. The girl had tied the wagon to her dog's collar and to the cat's testicles.

'Little partner,' the firefighter said, 'I don't want to tell you how to run your rig, but if you were to tie that rope around the cat's collar, I think you could go faster. '

The little girl replied thoughtfully, 'You're probably right, but then I wouldn't have a siren.'

Baby Airplanes:
A mother and her very young son were flying Southwest Airlines from Houston to Little Rock. The little boy (who had been looking out his window) turned to his mother and asked, "If big dogs have baby dogs, and big cats have baby cats, why don't big airplanes have baby airplanes?"

The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the flight attendant. So the boy went down the aisle and asked the flight attendant the same question.

The flight attendant, who was very busy at the time, smiled and said, "Did your mom tell you to ask me?"
The boy said, "Yes she did."

"Well then, you go and tell your mother that there are no baby airplanes because Southwest always pulls out on time. Have your mom explain that to you."

Post-PC World ?

America is sleep deprived.  We have become slaves to the very technologies that we developed to help us.  Kids don't turn off their cell phones at night.  Others sleep with the TV on.  Their brains never get to "shut off".  Without the proper amount of REM sleep (which we are not getting), we will fail.  Our health, our endeavors- they will fail.

Give me a break:  Pundits are claiming that we are entering the post-PC world.  How is this possible?  Tablets have got a lot of catching up, if that be the case.  After all, for the most part tablets are good for looking at content.  How did that content get there ?  What were the apps developed on?  Are they all nuts? While there are many tablets out there, they don't account for a very large percentage of the total PCs.  Most people tend to have both, if they have a tablet at all.
Gadhafi must think we are pretty stupid if we are to believe that he is bombing Al-Qaeda....

A Likely American Malady

File this under "the pot calling the kettle black": Sarah Palin is accusing Obama of lack of experience!

Senator McCain suffers from the same malady as most Americans.  Just because there is an American brand on an object, don't assume it is made here.  To think that Apple products are American is ludicrous.
Has anyone considered the possibility that Charlie Sheen has been keeping his feelings quiet for a long time, for the benefit of his show?  I think that people are being to hard on him and that he is entitled to whatever lifestyle that he wants.  The studio knew quite well what they were getting when they cast him.

Having a Bad Day?
Well, then, consider this..............

In a hospital's Intensive Care Unit, patients always died in the same bed, on Sunday morning, at about 11:00 a.m., regardless of their medical condition.

This puzzled the doctors and some even thought it had something to do with the supernatural. No one could solve the mystery as to why the deaths occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, so a worldwide team of experts was assembled to investigate the cause of the incidents.

The next Sunday morning, a few minutes before 11:00 a.m., all of the doctors and nurses nervously waited outside the ward to see for themselves what the terrible phenomenon was all about. Some were holding wooden crosses, prayer books, and other holy objects to ward off the evil spirits.

Just when the clock struck 11:00, Pookie Johnson, the part-time Sunday sweeper, entered the ward and unplugged the life support system so he could use the vacuum cleaner.

Interesting that a company that forces a bankrupt because they can't pay union wages or retirement pensions has enough capital to develop a robot for NASA.  I am speaking of General Motors, of course.  This is the same company that the gubmint bailed out (because they were too big to fail).  This is also the same company that promoted (with hype) their new solution to the world's problems, the overpriced Volt.  Too bad that that capital didn't go to making it so that it could sell for less than $40K plus.  Why would NASA go to GM for a robot, anyway ????

Looks like Continental Airlines is taking advantage of an opportunity, unfortunately the wrong way.  They have decided (in immeasurable wisdom) that they will no longer give out free pretzels in their flights, because it will align Continental with its competitors.  So I thought (stupid, stupid me) that any company would want to stand out from their competition to cause people to want to pick them OVER the competition.  This was their GOLDEN opportunity to offer MORE than their competitors and SCORE for it.
Here is a 'Made in America' Resource Guide: Where to Find American Companies [reprinted from ABC News]

A little boy was doing his math homework.
He said to himself, "Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven.
Three plus six, that son of a bitch is nine...."
His mother heard what he was saying and asked, "What are you doing?"
The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom."
"And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked.
"Yes," he answered.
Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What are you teaching my son in math?"
The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition."
The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that son of a bitch is four?"
After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."

Free Kindles! Free Texting! Woohoo!

So apparently, the Glory mission (which carried APS that was built at SBRS, where I used to work) has ended in the drink.  Why would NASA use the low-cost solution (Orbital) that wasn't and isn't.  'Tis a shame.
Mr. Zuckerberg is finally doing something that makes sense (cents).  Facebook has purchased a company called Beluga which is what Vonage is to Verizon.  They offer a new, FREE way to do text messages, without SMS.  This whole monopoly of charging 10 to 15 cents per text message would be totally circumvented by a little app that is installed on your phone.  I am totally in favor of any scheme which circumvents the blood-sucking phone companies.

Amazon is moving in the direction of giving Kindles away for free.  After all, they are in the business of selling books, not Kindles.  There is much more money to be made selling books.  Someone is going to be giving them away, and Amazon is in the best position.  Remember, I always said that Polaroid would still be in business (maybe), if they gave their cameras away for free.  There was more than enough profit in the film.
True story...
I was eating lunch today with my 12 year old grandson when his mom asked him "What is tomorrow?" He said "It's President's Day"

She asked "What does that mean?" .... I was waiting for something profound....

He said: "President's Day is when Obama steps out of the White House and if he sees his shadow, we have 2 more years of unemployment."

I almost snorted my iced tea.

This is an “actual letter” from an Austin , Texas woman sent to Proctor and Gamble regarding one of their feminine products. She really gets rolling after the first paragraph. This was PC Magazine’s 2009 Editors’ Choice award-winner for the best letter sent via e-mail.

Dear Mr. Thatcher,
I have been a loyal user of your ‘Always’ maxi pads for over 20 years and I appreciate many of their features. Why, without the LeakGuard Core or Dri-Weave absorbency, I’d probably never go horseback riding or salsa dancing, and I’d certainly steer clear of running up and down the beach in tight, white shorts.
But my favorite feature has to be your revolutionary Flexi-Wings. Kudos on being the only company smart enough to realize how crucial it is that maxi pads be aerodynamic. I can’t tell you how safe and secure I feel each month knowing there’s a little F-16 in my pants.
Have you ever had a menstrual period, Mr. Thatcher? I’m guessing you haven’t. Well, my time of the month is starting right now. As I type, I can already feel hormonal forces violently surging through my body. Just a few minutes from now, my body will adjust and I’ll be transformed into what my husband likes to call ‘an inbred hillbilly with knife skills’.
Isn’t the human body amazing?

As Brand Manager in the Feminine-Hygiene Division, you’ve no doubt seen quite a bit of research on what exactly happens during your customer’s monthly visits from ‘Aunt Flo’. Therefore, you must know about the bloating, puffiness, and cramping we endure, and about our intense mood swings, crying jags, and out-of-control behavior. You surely realize it’s a tough time for most women.
The point is, sir, you of all people must realize that America is just crawling with homicidal maniacs in Capri pants. Which brings me to the reason for my letter. Last month, while in the throes of cramping so painful I wanted to reach inside my body and yank out my uterus, I opened an Always maxi-pad, and there, printed on the adhesive backing, were these words: ‘Have a Happy Period.’
Are you f—— kidding me? What I mean is, does any part of your tiny middle-manager brain really think happiness – actual smiling, laughing happiness, is possible during a menstrual period? Did anything mentioned above sound the least bit pleasurable? Well, did it, James? FYI, unless you’re some kind of sick S&M freak, there will never be anything ‘happy’ about a day in which you have to jack yourself up on Motrin and Kahlua and lock yourself in your house just so you don’t march down to the local Walgreen’s armed with a hunting rifle and a sketchy plan to end your life in a blaze of glory.
For the love of God, pull your head out, man! If you have to slap a moronic message on a maxi pad, wouldn’t it make more sense to say something that’s actually pertinent, like ‘Put down the Hammer’ or ‘Vehicular Manslaughter is Wrong’?

Sir, please inform your Accounting Department that, effective immediately, there will be an $8 drop in monthly profits, for I have chosen to take my maxi-pad business elsewhere. And though I will certainly miss your Flex-Wings, I will not for one minute miss your brand of condescending bullsh!t. And that’s a promise I will keep.
Always,
Wendi Aarons

Dung Delight

I wonder if the gubmint uses this stuff.  An Indian entrepreneur has come up with a method for making paper out of elephant poop.  [Do you suppose they do this with donkey poop, to?  It would make a good election souvenir.] This, of course, is different from taking regular paper and putting elephant poop on it.  Honestly, I think that a much better application is to burn the poop for fuel to create power.   I REALLY don't think they have enough of the stuff to make a dent in the the fuel supplies, though.  I'm sure it is clean by the time the sell it, after all: the boil the crap out of it!

Some people think that America's best days are behind us. I don't believe that.  What we did was start the dominoes falling and we've been spinning our wheels trying to get them stopped.  The outsourcing of manufacturing and legislation like NAFTA sent us into a down-spiral.  At the same time, our economy became global, and the third world is becoming of age.  The only way to get our arms around the issues once again is to stop being mostly an importer and get back to exporting.  There needs to be further incentives to get businesses to stop outsourcing jobs.  At home, the absolutely best action we (as a country) can take is to stop buying imported products.  If they don't sell, then we will stop importing them.  If the American made products begin to sell better and better, then more of them will be made.  Take pride in your countries products.  Set an example for the rest of the world.

They were married, but since the argument they had a few days earlier, they hadn't been talking to each other. Instead they were giving each other written notes.
One evening he gave her a paper where it said: "Wake me up tomorrow morning at 6 am."
The next morning he woke up and saw that it was 9 o'clock.
Naturally he got very angry, but as he turned around he found a note on his pillow saying: "Wake up, it's 6 o'clock !!!"

iPad2 Content

Newsflash:  A proposal is on the table to merge ITA and Google.  That would put all the travel arrangements under the control of Google.  Most online booking sites like Orbitz would be out of business unless they contracted with Google.   This might be a good thing.  I haven't made up my mind yet.
I haven't seen it yet, but the so-called reviews by those that are privileged say that the new iPad2 has two things going for it: 1) all the new enhancements make it great for anyone that buys one and 2) it is great for Apple since you have to buy all the content from them.

GARFIELD ON THE OIL CRISIS
A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in our country.  Well, there's a very simple answer.Nobody bothered to check the oil. We  just didn't know we were getting low.  The reason for that is purely geographical. Our OIL is located in: ALASKA, California, Coastal Florida, Coastal Louisiana, Coastal Alabama, Coastal Mississippi, Coastal Texas, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, And Texas. Our dipsticks are located in DC!

Any Questions? NO? Didn't think So.

Leroy goes to the Parish revival and listens to the priest. After a while, the priest asks anyone with needs to be prayed over to come forward to the front at the altar.

Leroy gets in line, and when it's his turn, the priest asks: 'Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?'

Leroy replies: 'Father, I need you to pray for my hearing.'

The priest puts one finger in Leroy's ear, and he places the other hand on top of Leroy's head and prays and prays and prays. After a few minutes, the priest removes his hands, stands back and asks Leroy: 'Leroy, how is your hearing now?'

Leroy says, 'I don't know, Father, it ain't 'til next Wednesday

"A leak in the Alaskan Pipeline last week spilled 265,000 gallons of crude oil into the arctic tundra. British petroleum, the company that runs The oil operation, said that the spill was too small to be detected by their maintenance equipment. But just large enough to rise the price of gas fifteen cents a gallon this week."

Revolt Facilitating...

I'm having a hard time today.  There are so many things happening in the news today that I might comment on...but I think that Yemen is nuts to think that we sparked the demonstrations that are causing revolutions in Arab countries.  After all we invented the internet and made applications like Twitter and Facebook available.  Did we know that the average Arab in those countries has had his news filtered to the point that he thought is was well off and his leader is what the rest of the world has as well?  As communication improves to the point that each Arab citizen understands what he or she is missing, the revolt begins.  They all know that their leaders are siphoning off oil profits rather than sharing them with their people. Jealousy and rage has managed to get many Arab countries moving in the direction of revolt.

A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam. 'Now class, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!'

Oscar Disappointment...?

These were my predictions from yesterday...

Best Picture: 'The King’s Speech'
Best Actor: Colin Firth
Best Actress: Natalie Portman
Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale
Best Supporting Actress: Hailee Steinfeld

Not too bad, I only missed one!

The hosting of the Oscars was well done and very professional.  Franco and Hathaway were very impressive.  I have to admit, though, that the bubbly Anne Hathaway really did stand out when she briefly has a red dress on [WOW!].  Unfortunately, she changed more than Obama's promises in that short period of time....  As for my opinion of the hosting: "yawn".  It was okay--  better than Gervais.

Wondering what the shrinking paycheck will buy now? Here, a semi-random roundup of what some stuff costs from Time Magazine:

$9-$12 The cost range of a mid-priced bottle of wine—which, in the value-conscious post-recession era, is the fastest-growing segment of the industry

Over $100 The average woman's most recent impulse purchase—and 35% of women say they regret at least one impulse purchase made in the past year.

$129.75 The average monthly cable TV bill for Comcast customers, up from $107.20 in 2008. No wonder some 800,000 cable customers have cut the cord over the past two years.

$263 Estimated amount the typical cell phone user overpays annually because of signing up for the wrong wireless plan.

$417 What a sample group of consumers said an iPad is actually worth. That's $200 or so less than what Apple charges. No wonder many consumers feel the iPad is basically a toy and a time suck, just isn't worth the money.

$650 The bill you'll receive if you lose your three-foot snake on a Boston subway

$1,600 The expected first-year costs for owning a medium-size dog, per an ASPCA estimator

$1,738 Annual cost of the average commute in Chicago, the city with the most costly commutes in the country

$1,880 Amount the average pack-a-day smoker spends on cigarettes in a year, according to one estimate

$2,000 Amount of unexpected expenditures that the typical American consumer encounters annually.

$3,000 Approximate amount you'll pay to buy and use an iPhone over the mandatory two-year contract period.

$4,000 Cost for a man to attend certain mail-order bride "socials" in Eastern Europe

$6,751 The 2009 per capita state and local taxes paid in New Jersey, which has the nation's highest tax rate at 12.2% of per capita income.

$13,770 Cost of the average family's health insurance premiums in 2010. (That is, if they have health insurance.)

$18,773 Average annual price of full-time infant care in Massachusetts, the state with the highest daycare costs, according to the Boston Globe. That amount would eat up 18% of the average two-parent family's income, and 67% of the average single mom's earnings.

$20,435 Average cost of tuition, room and board for a college student in 2008—which, after factoring in inflation, is more than double the amount charged in 1980.

$84,388 Amount the average American will spend on auto insurance over his lifetime

$128,530 The average cash bonus given to a Wall Street worker in the financial services in 2010. That's actually down 8% from an average of over $140K the year before.

$132,683 What a typical $100-a-month cable bill really winds up costing you over a 25-year span

$396,000 The record amount paid at a Tokyo fish market auction for a 752-pound bluefin tuna last month.

$584,000 Median home price in San Francisco, one of the least affordable cities in the U.S.

$48 million Projected cost of Prince William and Kate Middleton's upcoming nuptials

$20.5 billion Total amount of credit card penalty fees charged to American customers in 2009.

$47.7 billion Estimated amount spent in the U.S. pet industry in 2010, up from $45.5 billion the year before.

$101 billion Approximate annual sales of beer in the U.S..

Murphy's Law of Logical Argument
- Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.

Last week I checked into my hotel in Tampa and was a bit lonely. I thought, I'll call one of those girls you see advertised in phone books like escorts and such. I picked up the phone book and found an ad for a girl calling herself Erogonique, a lovely girl, bending over in the photo. She had all the right curves in all the right places, beautiful long wavy hair, long graceful legs..... well, you get the picture!

I figured, what the heck, give her a call.
"Hello," the woman says . God, she sounded sexy.
Afraid I would lose my nerve if I hesitated I rushed right in. "Hi, I hear you give a great massage and I'd like you to come to my room and give me one. No, wait, I should be straight with you. I'm in town all alone and what I really want is sex.

I want it hard, I want it hot, and I want it now. Bring implements, toys, rubber, leather, whips, everything you've got in your bag of tricks. We'll go hot and heavy all night; tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything and everything! Now, how does that sound?"
"That sounds fantastic," she says, "but you need to press 9 for an outside line."
