My Statement

"Let me emphatically say that I am not anti-Facebook (Fleecebook), anti-smart phone, anti-Microsoft, anti-Apple, anti-Google or anti-Internet. I do believe, though, that the consumer is being ripped off of his privacy, identity and purchase history. We are being herded into a Facebook corner where what we "Like" and where we go physically and on the net will be scrutinized and sold numerous times to actually corrode and erode our culture while tempting us only with convenience, high tech and flashing video screens. The unsuspecting consumers need to be aware..." - Gary Lapman

Teetering Libya...

Believe it or not:  A man in Egypt named his baby "Facebook" after the the role it played in the revolution.

Looks like Libya might be the next to fall.  Gadhafi (spelling keeps changing  depending where you look...) is very deserving of what he gets.  He has been pillaging that country and their people for forty years.

I see many places that claim that the iPad couldn't be lower priced, but I differ.  When Polaroid was in business, they charged high priced for both camera and film.  I claimed at the time that they could have given the cameras away for free, because there was so much profit on the film. The more iPads that are in use, the more Apps et cetera that will be sold, and they will self perpetuate.  I think the perfect off from these E-reader companies is to throw in the reader for free or a reduced price given that a certain number of books are purchased.  I honestly believe that it will come to that before long.  The number of E-readers on the market will HAVE to shrink unless they agree on a format very soon...

A Scottish tourist attended his first baseball game in the US and after a base hit he hears the fans roaring "Run....Run!"
The next batter connects heavily with the ball and the Scotsman stands up and roars with the crowd in his thick accent: "R-r-run ya bahstard, r-run will ya!"

A third batter hits a slam and again the Scotsman, obviously pleased with his knowledge of the game, screams "R-r-run ya bahstard, r-r-run will ya!"

The next batter steadfastly holds his swing four times and as the ump calls a walk the Scotsman stands up and yells "R-r-run ya bahstard, r-r-run!"

All the surrounding fans giggle quietly and he sits down confused. A friendly fan, sensing his embarrassment, whispers to the Scotsman, "He doesn't have to run, he's got four balls."

After this explanation the Scotsman stands up in disbelief and screams, "Walk with pr-r-ride man! Walk with pr-r-ride!!!!"

The C.O.'s Morning Briefing:
The Commanding Officer of a Regiment in the U. S. Marine Corps was about to start the morning briefing to his Staff and Battalion and Company Commanders. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish its brewing, he decided to pose a question to all assembled. He explained that his wife had
been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep. He posed the question of just how much of sex was 'work' and how much of it was 'pleasure?' The X.O. chimed in with 75-25% in favor of work.
A Captain said it was 50-50%.
The Colonel's Aide, a Lt., responded with 25-75% in favor of pleasure, depending on his state of inebriation at the time.
There being no consensus, the Colonel turned to the Private First Class who was in charge of making the coffee. What was HIS opinion?
With out hesitation, the young Private First Class responded, "Sir, it absolutely has to be 100% pleasure."
The Colonel was surprised and, as you might guess, asked why?
"Well, Sir, began the Private First Class, "if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them."

The room fell silent.

GRANDMA as a Senior Driver
The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a 'Honk if you love Jesus' bumper sticker.
I was feeling particularly sassy that day, because I had just come from a thrilling choir practice followed by a powerful prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is, and I didn't notice that the light had changed.

It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus; because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed.
I found that LOTS of people love Jesus. Why, while I was sitting there, the nice man behind started honking like crazy, and he leaned out of his window and screamed, 'for the love of God, GO! GO!' What an exuberant cheerleader
he was for the Lord.

Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people.
I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. There must have been a man from Florida back there, because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach. I saw another man waving in a funny way with only his middle
finger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was an Hawaiian good luck sign or something.

Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back.
My grandson burst out laughing; why even he was enjoying this religious experience.

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So I waved to all my sisters and brothers, smiled at them all, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again, and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window, and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away.

Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!

Good and Really Bad Movies...

Last night we went to see "Unknown".  This story unfolded well, a kind of "Bourne" adventure.  It has many special effects and chase scenes, but the best part is the "gotcha" at the end.  All of the loose ends are taken care of.  This is a strong "B" movie.

Upon returning home, we realized that nothing was on TV, so we decided to play on of my son's rental DVDs.  The movie was "Due Date".  This is the sorriest excuse for a movie since "Dinner For Smucks".  How they ever got anybody to fund the making of this catastrophe is beyond me.

HOW TO INSTALL A HOME SECURITY SYSTEM IN THE SOUTH1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots.

2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo magazine and your NRA magazines.

3. Put a few giant-sized dog dishes next to the boots and magazine.

4. Leave a note on your door that reads:
"Hey Bubba, Big Jim, Duke and Slim, I went for more ammunition. Back in about an hour. Don't mess with the pit bulls -- they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up real bad. I don't think Killer took part in it but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyways, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait in your truck till I get back."

IT'S SO HOT AND DRY IN TEXAS
....the birds have to use potholders to pull the worms out of the ground.
....the trees are whistling for the dogs.
....the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
....hot water comes from both taps. ....you can make sun tea instantly.
....you learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
....the temperature drops below 95 F (35 C) and you feel a little chilly.
....you discover that in July it only takes two fingers to steer your car.
....you discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
....you actually burn your hand opening the car door.
....you break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 A.M.
....your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death"?
....you realize that asphalt has a liquid stage.

IT'S SO DRY IN TEXAS............
That the Baptist are starting to baptize by sprinkling,
The Methodists are using wet-wipes,
Presbyterians are giving rain checks,
And the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water!

An extremely large, muscular woman, wearing a sleeveless sundress, walked into a bar. She raised her right arm, revealing a huge, hairy armpit and pointed to all the men sitting at the bar and asked, "Which of you men will buy a lady a drink?" The bar went silent as the patrons tried to ignore her. At the end of the bar, was Boudreaux, a skinny little Cajun, who was as usual, VERY drunk. Boudreaux slammed his hand on the bar and said, "Give dat Ballerina a drink!" Thibodeaux, the bartender, a close friend of Boudreaux's, poured the drink and the woman chugged it down. She turned again to the patrons and pointed around at all of them, again revealing her hairy armpit, and asked, "Which of you men will buy a lady a drink?" Once again, Boudreaux slapped his hand down on the bar and said, "Give dat Ballerina anudder drink!" Thibodeaux, finally approached Boudreaux and said, "Boudreaux mah fren', I know it ain't none of my business of course if you want to buy dat lady a drink, but how come you keep callin' her a Ballerina?" Boudreaux replied, "Thibodeaux . . . to me, any woman who can lift her leg dat high gots to be a Ballerina!"

Entitlements....

Expectations (or entitlements):  Our kids honestly are spoiled.  I don't know anyone that doesn't try very diligently to give more of everything to their kids than you had.  Because of that, they expect more.  They are entitled to it, of course.  We can only blame ourselves for the indulgence.  We could have all learned more from the Tiger Moms.
Now with all the ta-do in Wisconsin as of late, I began to think about the situation a bit more.  We all know that nothing is a 100% given in this world.  We all hope that when the time comes to retire, that the pension that you worked so hard for, is still there (and the company is still in business).  If I were a teacher and I was not expected to pay into Social Security (or the like), I would naturally expect that the alternative retirement options would be available when I retire.  What if they are not? What would I do?
Suppose I was already retired (category 1) and I was dependent on the retirement benefits I am already getting.  There would be no alternative.
Suppose I was still working (category 2) and have put in my "dues" towards retirement expecting the bennies to be there when I'm ready.
And lastly, suppose I am becoming a teacher or whatever (category 3), and am expecting to begin earning the capability to draw on those bennies someday.

I realize, that if the state is broke, all bets are off, but the implied contract here is that those bennies are a promise that needs to continue. Not negotiating on a partial settlement is a bad choice, which will mean that you get nothing. So much for expectations or entitlements!

Wisconsin is not so far removed from many other state, including California.  What will we do?

A young reporter went to a retirement home to interview an aged but legendary explorer. The reporter asked the old man to tell him the most frightening experience he had ever had.

The old explorer said, "Once I was hunting Bengal tigers in the jungles of India. I was on a narrow path and my faithful native gun bearer was behind me. Suddenly the largest tiger I have ever seen leaped onto the path in front of us. I turned to get my weapon only to find the native had fled. The tiger leaped toward me with a mighty ROARRRR! I just shit my pants"

The reporter said, "Under those circumstances anyone would have done the same."

The old explorer said, "No, not then -- just now when I went ROARRRR!"

The local newspaper recently asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year's winners:
1. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding a stupid person that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
2. Foreploy (v): Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
3. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.
4. Giraffiti (n): Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.
5. Sarchasm (n): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
6. Inoculatte (v): To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
7. Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.
8. Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
9. Karmageddon (n): its like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
10 Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
11. Glibido (v): All talk and no action.
12. Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
13. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.
14. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
15. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you're eating. And the pick of the literature: is both stupid and an asshole.

Face the Music About State's Ability To Pay

Intermixing of humans and circuitry has begun.  The Singularity is not that far off....

Looks like the demonstrations are happening in many of the other Arab countries, but so far with different results.  Many people are getting killed.  As I predicted, most of these other countries are not going to throw down without a fight.  They won't allow another Egypt to happen...

Fight back against your state legislature.  If you vote in new taxes, you will just be allowing them the kick the can down the rad again.  Wisconsin is the first to have to face being broke and trying to reason with the unions.  So far it is not working.  This is going to have to work in ALL the states.  Negotiate or face the state's bankruptcy and then you get NOTHING.

Experts warned today of a new and deadly threat to our beleaguered civilization: The 100GB Bug.

As most people know, McDonald's restaurant signs show the number of hamburgers the giant chain has sold. That number now stands at 99 billion burgers, or 99 Gigaburgers (GB). Within months or even weeks, that number will roll over to 100GB. McDonald's signs, however, were designed years ago, when the
prospect of selling one hundred billion hamburgers seemed unthinkably remote. So the signs have space for only two digits. This means that, after the sale of the 100 billionth burger, McDonald's signs will read "00 Billion Burgers Sold." This, experts predict, will convince the public that, in over thirty years, no McDonald's hamburgers have ever in fact been sold, causing a complete collapse of consumer confidence in McDonald's products.

The ensuing catastrophic drop in sales is seen as almost certain to force the already-troubled company into bankruptcy. This, in turn, will push the teetering American economy over the brink, which, finally, will complete the total devastation of the global economy, ending civilization as we know it, and forcing us all to live on beetles.

"The people who know, the sign-makers, are really scared of 100GB", one expert said. "I don't know about you, but I'm digging up a copy of THE FIELD GUIDE TO NORTH AMERICAN INSECTS and heading for the hills."

A Billion More for Baghdad...

Watson rules.  The bout finished as predicted, with Watson in the lead and Ken Jennings finishing second.  Thinking more about the problem, I can believe that the computing power was put to good  use to calculate inference, anecdotal reference and probabilities.  I also believe that the contents of the database that is searched and linked (and re-linked) would have a tremendous impact on the performance of the algorithms.  It was, I'm sure, a monumental task just to figure out what information to load into Watson, never mind the linkages between the items.  Building heuristic algorithms, as well as heuristic linkages in the database is no easy task.  The human brain is quite impressive in this area of content addressibility of its memory.  I would say to IBM, "A job well done".  A documentary on the building of Watson would be very interesting.

This will go REALLY far:  Baghdad has demanded a billion dollars from the U.S for war damages.  Gimme a break!

Bye Borders.  It is a shame that paradigm shifts have passed you bye.  We'll miss you (for a bit).

A man goes into the government office in Tehran and asks to speak to an official about emigrating to America.
"OK" the clerk says, "So you want to leave and live in America. Why do you want to do this? Are you not happy with your Government?"
"I have no complaints", replied the man.
"Then perhaps you do not like your job?"
"I have no complaints" again replied the man.
"Are you not happy with your wives? They only let you have one wife in America"
"I have no complaints" the man said a third time.

The clerk, obviously a little frustrated, then says "If you are so happy with your job and your wives and your government, then why do you want to leave the great contry of Iran to live in America?"

"Because there, I can have complaints"

"Why only second place?" Maurice asks.
"Because you’re a schmuck!" Sadie screams.

Push 1 For English

It should bother you that we have all lost ground.  What do I mean about that?  Here is an example:  You go to use an ATM and it doesn't ask you for your PIN first, but it does ask you to push a button for English.  You call your doctor, or the DMV and the first words you hear are "Push one for English".  Who was the idiot that invented this system?  Why not push a button for Spanish or Swahili or French?  Why not NOT push anything for English?  What is supposed to be mainstream here?  I resent the fact that I have lost that much ground from my original position as a citizen.  Recently, I went to the DMV to get a pamphlet to study for a driver's license renewal.  I was directed to  a rack of cubbyholes on the far wall.  There I found pamphlets in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and a few others.  When I got to the English cubby, they were all gone.  I returned to the DMV worker and it was recommended that I take up another language so that I could use their pamphlet!  If I am not mistaken, aren't ALL our traffic signs in English?  Aren't the written tests in English (maybe they have those in other languages as well)? Whose bright legislation required the DMV to "provide" all of those different languages?  Why isn't there an extra charge for those (I certainly don't want to pay for them)?  When someone that ONLY speaks/reads Chinese, does the DMV bring in someone special to administer the test?  I REALLY don't have a problem with non-English speaking people driving, but why are the rest of us forced to pay (monetarily and other ways)?  Has anyone ever spent many minutes navigating through all the button pushes on a large phone system?  Why not eliminate the most insulting first button push?  How far must the state of our States decline ?

Another article about Facebook losing steam.  It is probably the best thing that could happen....

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below.
He lowers the balloon further and shouts: "Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"
The man below says: "yes you're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field."
"You must work in Information Technology," says the balloonist.
"I do," replies the man. "How did you know?"
"Well" says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's no use to anyone."
The man below says, "You must work in Management".
"I do" replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well", says the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."

A candidate for an opening

Skeleton In The Closet
A very large, old, building was being torn down in Chicago to make room for a new skyscraper. Due to its proximity to other buildings it could not be imploded and had to be dismantled floor by floor.

While working on the 49th floor, two construction workers found a skeleton in a small closet behind the elevator shaft. They decided that they should call the police.

When the police arrived they directed them to the closet and showed them the skeleton fully clothed and standing upright. They said, "This could be Jimmy Hoffa or somebody really important."

Two days went by and the construction workers couldn't stand it any more; they had to know who they had found. They called the police and said, "We are the two guys who found the skeleton in the closet and we want to know if it was Jimmy Hoffa or somebody important."

The police said, "It's not Jimmy Hoffa, but it was somebody kind of important."

"Well, who was it?"

"The 1956 Blonde National Hide-and-Seek Champion."

Watson Rules...

Apparently the formula for Coca-Cola has been broadcast on the radio.  Will this hurt their sales? Is this Un-American activity?  I'm sure they will survive.

Watson did a pretty good job on Jeopardy last night.  I was really expecting the computer to process the spoken clue, but Trebek said that it receives the clues in text form.  It is amazing to me that so much computing power is necessary to deal with the inferences and anecdotal clues.  It was also revealed that the computer does not have any access to the internet and can only reference what had been loaded into its database.  Also, by not having voice input processing, Watson was unable to determine that a human supplied answer was wrong and it shouldn't supply the same answer.   We'll see if it learned sufficiently to win tonight.  Tonight it took way off and finished way in the lead...

Looks like the protesters in Iran will get their reward as the Iranian goverment has decided to execute the protest leaders.  I guess the Iranians are much different than Egyptians...

At Sunday School they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially interested when they told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs.

Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said, "Johnny what is the matter?"

Little Johnny responded, "I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."

Marching to the Singularity, Willingly or Not

As late as the beginning of this month, there was discovered an uncontacted tribe found near the Peru-Brazil border.  Should we contact them or leave them alone?  What would they think of us? What have they thought about planes flying overhead? Would our level of disease (even the common cold) affect them adversely?
Suppose we DO leave them alone, which I DO believe is best for all, what societal effects would we be able to measure from afar?  What of the Singularity, whose emergence is in less than 34 years?  How will the Singularity effect the third world of today?  Will they be sufficiently "caught up" in the next 34 years to deal with it?
I think the conceptualization of the Singularity generates many more questions than it will answer.

Last night's Grammy Awards show was unusual.  There were 109 Grammys given out, but only 11 during the show.  That left three hours plus for performances.   Lady Gaga was very good, while Mick Jagger was okay..., but Bob Dylan and Barbra Streisand were both missing the old punch they used to be able to deliver.  Am I disappointed that Justin Bieber was snubbed? Probably not, but I'm not sure I understand the political ramifications that caused that to happen.  The winner is an unknown to me.  For the most part, it was pretty enjoyable, but at NO time were the previous 98 (non-televised) awards revealed.  I would probably characterize it as a disappointment except for a few high points...

In Memoriam
With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey", died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

How Valentines Day Originated:
Ancient Times: The beginnings of the holiday started with a dissident tribe of pagans, later identified as a band of Republican Presidential Candidates. At that time Hallmark cards were not able to use the modern techniques of printing such as ink jets and lasers. Instead the company used the blood of goats of dogs as primitive forms of ink. To keep the locals unsuspicious of their capitalistic exploitation of the holiday they presented the dead animals as a sacrifice to Lupercalia. Also the origins of dominatrix and sadomasochism are seen at this time when young men would use the hides to whip the infertile women of the town asking them “Who’s yo’ daddy?”

Modern Times: Today children and lovers celebrate the holiday together. Children give candy hearts either for the sugar high or a peck on the cheek behind Mrs. Weidlemeyer’s classroom. On the other hand, lovers exchange chocolate hearts. They become disillusioned, thinking that on that night, instead of performing the act of sex, they will delve into the art of making love. Lovers fill every restaurant in town, leaving singles to make reservations even at the drive-thru line at McDonald's.

Singularity is Our Destiny OR Nothing Gets Old as Fast as the Future

I just read this great article in Time magazine on the Singularity, [and two, three and four]. A previous blog entry about Jaron Lanier touched on the subject, but the real progenitor is Raymond Kurzweil.  There have been many movies about robots that have sentient thought and no longer wish to do human bidding, but to be on their own.  It is a difficult concept to get my arms around. Also I don't know if we wish to prevent it or whether we can.
Can we reach immortality via these man-made objects?

I personally think that the timeline is conservative and that we will probably reach that 2045 destination sooner.
A momentous occasion, in the evolution of the chess playing Big Blue, will occur beginning tomorrow on TV.  The Jeopardy show will provide a human versus computer event when IBM's Watson computer will play two human champions. This is akin to a circus act.
What is the socio-economic impact of a sentient computer?  So far predictions of the future, the world of tomorrow have, for the most part, been wrong.  We don't have flying cars or homes that nurture us automatically like a suckling pig.  We haven't done away with money and its evils.  We cannot control the weather,  Stay tuned, as the best(?) is yet to come, if we don't become extinct!  Remember, your thoughts are not your own!

Last night we watched "Unstoppable".  It held grip on our attentions for the duration, but it was more like a newsreel, rather than a movie, as it lacked the depth of characterizations that would have mad it much better.  I would give it a "C" grade and we decided it worth of a rental, but not a visit to the theater.

Are we re-wiring our brains at an early age to deal with interruptions rather than focus ?  Have you ever wondered what impact cell phones, video games and PCs would have on our kids?  Many of them never have any "down" time.  They are constantly being bombarded with technology.  They sleep with "one eye open" to interruptions from their smart phone.  This cannot be good. Are we breeding a future race of ADHD individuals that are addicted to and dependent on technological enlightenment 24/7 ?

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The grandfather replied, “Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:

- Television
- Penicillin
- Polio shots
- Frozen food
- Xerox
- Contact lenses
- Frisbees
- The pill
- ATM machines
- Cell Phones

There were no:
- credit cards
- laser beams
- ball-point pens

Man had not invented:
- panty hose
- air conditioners
- dishwashers
- clothes dryers

Clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn’t yet walked on the moon.

Your grandmother and I got married first, and then lived together.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, ‘Sir.’ And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title ‘Sir.”

We were before computer-dating, dual careers, day-care centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgement, and common sense…

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong, and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends—not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, i(anything), electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President’s speeches on our radios.

I don’t ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

If you saw anything with ‘Made in Japan’ on it, it was junk.

The term ‘making out’ referred to how you did on your school exam.

We had 5&10 Cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn’t want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail one letter and two post cards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:

-‘grass’ was mowed
-‘coke’ was a cold soft drink.
-‘pot’ was something your mother cooked in
-‘rock music’ was your grandmother’s lullaby.
-‘AIDS’ were helpers in the Principal’s office
-‘chip’ meant a piece of wood
-‘hardware’ was found in a hardware store
-‘software’ wasn’t even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us ‘old and confused’ and say there is a generation gap.”

How old do you think I am?

I am 60 years old.

This guy goes to a football game and three nuns are sitting in front of him with full head gear. Upset because he can't see he asks them to move.
The first nun says "We where here first".
The guy says "but I can't see a damn thing."
The second nun says "You have choices to move, my son, and we don't".
The guy says "And what choices would that be?"
The third nun says "You can go to hell, we won't be there."

An elderly man in North Carolina had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back, fixed up really nice, along with some picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. When he came closer, he realized it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end to shield themselves.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"
The old man frowned and replied, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."
Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

What Arab country is next to fall...

What will be the next Middle East country to fall?  So far that is Tunisia, Jordan and Egypt. We are all hoping for Iran to be next, but each country is different- and Iran is probably the worst.  It is the worst to live in and the hardest possible to cause to fall.  Because it has a religious leader that shares the top role with the president, it would be very difficult. IMHO, there is unrest in Algeria, so that may be the next. Unless the people have access to the Internet, it will take a much bigger effort to organize them.  It is odd, really, that we have not heard of any direction by the Muslim Brotherhood regarding other countries.

swallow

Finally Free of Mubarak, we hope...

Well either Mubarak managed to get his billions out of the country (finally) or he began to fear for his life, but at least he is gone.  More power to the freedom call of the Egyptian people.  I hope this is not the last of the Arab countries to be freed....

So the Verizon iPhone reports are underwhelming.  The CDMA network that Verizon uses was designed for packetizing voice, while the GSM network that AT&T uses was designed for packetizing data.  Clearly that means that regular phone use should work better on Verizon while smartphones would suffer, until the 4G version comes out. One could get better customer service from Verizon but not necessarily better service.

True  Story.....
Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being  surrounded by civilization that complains about  the noise from the base and its planes,  forgetting that it was there long before they  were..  A certain lieutenant colonel at  Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back.  Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining  about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her  day at the mall. When that  individual read the response from a Luke AFB  officer, it must Have stung quite a  bit.

The  complaint:
'Question of the day' for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the  morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely  9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets  made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing  west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet.  Imagine our good fortune!  Do the Tom  Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call,  or were they trying to impress the cashiers at  Mervyns early bird special?

Any  response would be  appreciated.

The  response:
Regarding  'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at  precisely 9:12 a.m . , a  perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-1 6s from  the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was  previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial  Day.

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his  family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband,  son and friend. Based on the letter writer's  recount of the fly by, and because of the jet  noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun  salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave  them their son's flag on behalf of the President  of the United States and all those veterans and  servicemen and women who understand the  sacrifices they have endured..

A  four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air  Force gives to those who give their lives in  defense of freedom. We are professional aviators  and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what  the letter writer witnessed was four officers  lining up to pay their ultimate  respects.

The letter writer asks,  'Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The  56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you,  and forward your thanks to the widow and parents  of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it  was in their honor that my pilots flew the most  honorable formation of their  lives.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.
One died for your  soul, the other for your  freedom.

Lt.  Col. Grant L. Rosensteel,  Jr., USAF

"Send 'em up, I'll  wait!"
...conversation overheard on the VHF Guard  (emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai   .

Iranian Air Defense Site: "Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself."
Aircraft: "This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace."
Air Defense Site: "You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!"
Aircraft: "This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter.  Send 'em up, I'll wait!"
Air Defense Site: ( ... total silence)

God bless our troops.
There is something about a Marine that makes other countries listen to reason.

Three old timers were relating their most exciting experiences.

The first, a retired sheriff, described the terrifying excitement of a shoot-out with Bonnie and Clyde back in his younger days.

The other gents nodded and agreed that, indeed, would have been exciting.

The second, a retired fireman, related the tale of a huge fire at the university several years back. There were flames, fire trucks from several area fire departments, but the most exciting part were the naked coeds jumping from their dorm windows into his arms.

The others gents agreed that had to be a very exciting time.

The third guy, a retired undertaker, started, "One night I got a call to pick up a body that was under a sheet in a hotel room. When I got there, the guy had a huge erection. I knew there was no way I could get him through the lobby like that. So I found an old broom and whacked that erection just as hard as I could to make it go down." He paused.
The retired fireman asked, "So, how was that exciting?"

The undertaker answered, "Well, you see, I was in the wrong room."

The problem in Egypt is that so many government officials are rich and the people are poor. I think it’s a pyramid scheme.

A Trump Ticket?

So once again the Santa Barbara city council has reversed a decision due to public outcry and ridicule.  I'd like to think that a few of my published letters had something to do with the current decision.  The council has the unfortunate proclivity toward solving problems by a backdoor approach to changing the setting for symptoms and then praying that the problem just vanishes.  Foiled again...  Now they might have to do real work to solve the panhandling issues rather than a dance around them.  Knowing them, they will probably just pass an ordinance against them and "pray the problem goes away".

Poor Lindsay Lohan NOT. Is she so brainless to assume that she can walk out of a store with a diamond necklace on the assumption of "borrowing" it?  Either her arrogance or naivete has to be reined in by a caregiver (governess ?) or Lindsay will be spending the next two years doing hard time (without a way out).  She is ripe for blame and unbelievability so she must walk on eggshells for a long time to get her quotient back up.  Someone close to her needs to hire someone with half a brain to watch over her.

Why do you suppose that all forms of investigations have not been able to put their finger on the reason why gasoline is so highly priced in Santa Barbara?  Is it such a privilege to drive here?  Interestingly enough, one of the reasons that has been claimed is that the Air Pollution Control District is so strict here that a different gas mixture is required.  That would be a county-wide requirement, yet in other cities like Santa Maria or Lompoc, the prices a much lower.  Much oil is taken from the ocen bound wells in this county.  I'm sure that there are high taxes placed on that enterprise.  Perhaps they are just trying to get part of it back?

GIVE ME A BREAK!  Donald Trump is thinking seriously about running for president!  How will he ever beat out Sarah Palin? Buy her off?  Buy out the competition?

Did we expect less?  She's at it again...Sarah Palin has called one of her potential rivals (Former Senator Rick Santorum) a "knuckle-dragging Neanderthal."  Isn't it amazing what comes out of her moth, as well as what she get's away with?  I suppose that she will pay the ULTIMATE price someday, as all of these incidents will come back to haunt her.

Obama is sporting egg on his face after he "convinced" Mubarak to resign, but then in in "resignation" speech, he didn't.  Now Obama is vowing support to the people of Egypt.  I wonder if he will still agree with that after they take a potshot at Mubarak.
