My Statement

"Let me emphatically say that I am not anti-Facebook (Fleecebook), anti-smart phone, anti-Microsoft, anti-Apple, anti-Google or anti-Internet. I do believe, though, that the consumer is being ripped off of his privacy, identity and purchase history. We are being herded into a Facebook corner where what we "Like" and where we go physically and on the net will be scrutinized and sold numerous times to actually corrode and erode our culture while tempting us only with convenience, high tech and flashing video screens. The unsuspecting consumers need to be aware..." - Gary Lapman

Hump(day)ing Along...

Nasty day today.  I was in a meeting until after six.  I don't think they pay us enough for the aggravation presented today.

In spite of that was a beautiful warm day and every chance I got outside for a few minutes, it was heavenly!

Better than work, work, work....
An old man turned 115 and was being interviewed by a reporter for
the local paper. During the interview the reporter noticed that
the yard was full of children of all ages playing together. A
very pretty girl of about 19 served the old man and the reporter,
keeping them in fresh tea and running errands for them.

"Are these your grandkids?" the reporter asked.

"Naw, sir, they all be my younguns," the old man replied with a
sly grin.

"Your kids?" said the reporter. "What about this beautiful young
lady who keeps bringing us tea? Is she one of your children too?"

"Naw, sir," said the old man. "She be my wife."

"Your wife?" said the surprised reporter. "But she can't be more
than 19 years old."

"Thass right," said the old man with pride.

"Well, surely you can't have a sex life with you being 115 and
she being only 19," the reporter remarked.

"Sir, " said the old man. "We have sex every night. Every
night two of my boys helps me on it, and every morning six of my
boys helps me off."

"Wait just one minute," said the newspaperman. "Why does it only
take two of your boys to put you on, but it takes six of them to
take you off?"

"Cause," the spry old man said with a balled fist, "I fights
'em."

A freshman at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the
Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair on January 26.

In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding
strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen
monoxide." And for plenty of good reasons, since it can:

1. cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2. it is a major component in acid rain
3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
4. accidental inhalation can kill you
5. it contributes to erosion
6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 150 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

One hundred forty-three said yes
Six were undecided
Only one knew that the chemical was...

Water!

The title of his prize winning project was,

"How Gullible Are We?"

He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to the
alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of
everything in our environment.

The conclusion is obvious.

Two bowling teams, one of all Blonds and one of all Brunettes, charter a double-decker bus for a weekend bowling tournament in Atlantic City. The Brunette team rides in the bottom of the bus. The Blond team rides on the top level.

The Brunette team down below is whooping it up having a great time, when one of them realizes she doesn't hear anything from the Blonds upstairs.

She decides to go up and investigate. When the Brunette reaches the top, she finds all the Blonds frozen in fear, staring straight-ahead at the road, and clutching the seats in front of them with white knuckles.

She says, "What the heck's goin' on up here? We're havin' a grand time downstairs!" One of the Blonds looks up and says, "Yeah, but you've got a driver!"

Where is this year going ?

Hard to believe that it is into April already. Is the year going by really fast, or is it just me ?

Another earthquake!  What is this world coming to (literally) ?

I read another review of the iPad, and the conclusions were the same as mine- most importantly, he couldn't figure out what to do with it either.  But even more important, he couldn't wait to get one.  Isn't it amazing that Apple doesn't make what we want, but we want what they tell us we need?

Well, bonds are going to hell and I just changed my 401k to exclude them.  I hope it makes a difference.  Some people even say that the gold bubble is almost ready to blow.  That will be an interesting one, especially to see what it affects.

There was this magician who had a job on a cruise liner, entertaining the passengers with a nightly show. He was very successfull in his job and there was always a full house at all his performances. Life was sweet. The money was rolling in, he had one of the best cabins, ate the best food, mixed with the best people. All was fine until one day the captain bought a parrot.

The highlight of the parrot's day was going along to see the magician in action in the evening. During the magician's performances, the parrot would watch him very carefully during each trick, and immediately after the magician had completed the trick the parrot would call out in a loud squark, "It's up his sleeve, it's up his sleeve," or, "It's down his trousers, it's down his trousers," each time ruining the magician's trick.

Well life was no longer as sweet and the magician started to struggle to satisfy the passengers. The magician naturally got very tired of the parrot and longed to kill it.

Then one night in the middle of the magician's performances, the ship hit an iceberg and sank. Everyone was killed except for the magician and the parrot. The magician managed to swim to a piece of wreckage, climbed aboard and collapsed. The parrot flew towards the magician and perched on the edge of the raft and stared at the magician.

For a whole day the magician was unconscious, and all this time the parrot did not take his eyes off him. Eventually the magician started to stir, and looked up not really knowing where he was or what had happened. He eventually found enough energy to sit up. He then noticed the parrot, who had not stopped focusing his eyes on him all this time.

"Alright I give up ..." chirped the parrot, "... what have you done with the ship?"

How The Government Works
Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job.

Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without
instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One to do the studies and one to write the reports.

Then Congress said, "How are these people going to get paid?" So they created the following positions, a time keeper, and a payroll officer, then hired two people.

Then Congress said, "Who will be accountable for all of these
people?" So they created an administrative section and hired three people, an Administrative Officer, Assistant Administrative Officer, and a Legal Secretary.

Then Congress said, "We have had this command in operation for one year and we are $18,000 over budget, we must cutback overall cost."

So they laid off the night watchman.

The first old woman told the second old woman that sometimes she gets her husband excited at night by getting totally naked, lying in bed and putting both legs behind her head, yoga style.
The second old woman thought that this was a great idea, so that night when her husband went in the bathroom to get ready for bed, she got totally naked and began the process of putting her legs behind her head.
The first leg was kind of tough to put in place as she was a bit arthritic. However, she finally got it in place.
She had an even tougher time with the second leg, so she rocked herself backwards until she finally got it behind her head.
However, she had rocked just a little too hard so that she flipped slightly backwards and got stuck with her butt sticking straight up in the air. It was just then that her husband came out of the bathroom.
"Gladys!" he exclaimed." For heavens sake, comb your hair and put your teeth in .... You look like an asshole."

Almost 150 years ago, President Lincoln found it necessary to hire a private investigator, Alan Pinkerton, for protection. That was the beginning of the Secret Service. Since that time, federal police authority has grown to a large number of multi-letter agencies - FBI, CIA, INS, IRS, DEA, ATF, etc.
Now comes the Federal Air Transportation Airport Security Service.
Can't you see them now, these highly trained men and women in their black outfits with initials in large white letters across their backs? F. A. T. A. S. S. - - - - - - - I feel safer already.

iPad Madness...

Met my new manager today.  This might work out.  She claims that she doesn't want to change anything here, just go with the flow.  We'll see!

Meanwhile, can you believe all these Apple lemmings?  I haven't figured out whether they just have to have the latest Apple gear or they really have a use for the iPad.  Based on my own principles of bleeding-edge technologies: 1) Let them work out all the bugs first. , 2) Pay less in a few months for the same but better technology. , & 3) Have a good use for what they are selling.

The only task that I can think about so far is to use it to read newspapers and books.  Perhaps I'm just too old fashioned, but I really want some device that is lighter and with a larger display.  Also, I'd really like a convenient way to put "other" documents on it- other than what I buy from iBook or iTunes or iWhatever.  The simplest feature that Apple could have provided was a USB port, which they didn't, so currently if you can find a program that will run on it to read your document, you would have to email it to yourself and then save it from the email.  Perhaps King Jobs has some other predilection, but he is not making that very clear at this point.  I am NOT going to rush out to buy a toy for that price unless I can come up with a plan.

Check out the recent travels of peeps:  Peeps around the world...
And more: World of Peeps
An ultimately: Peeps Definitively

CD Player

I wanted to buy a CD player, but was completely perplexed by one model's promotional sign. So I called the salesclerk over and asked, "What does 'hybrid pulse D/A converter' mean?"

He said, "That means that this machine will read the digital information that is encoded on CDs and convert it into an audio signal."

"In other words," I said, "this CD player plays CDs."

"Exactly."

 Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgg!

A blond and her husband are lying in bed listening to the next door neighbor's dog.

It has been in the backyard barking for hours and hours. The blonde jumps up out of bed and says, "I've had enough of this." She goes downstairs and out the back door.

After a little while, the blond finally comes back up to bed and her husband says, "The dog is still barking, what have you been doing?"

The blond answers, "I put the dog in OUR backyard, now let's just see how THEY like it."

FUI [Flying Under the Influence] ??

I'm a bit sad this morning.  We have to take Tori back to school and we really didn't get to spend any time together.  Next week is my birthday and she'll be away at school...

The headlines say that it is okay now for a commercial pilot to fly while taking anti-depressants. This doesn't make sense to me.  It is like saying that we can drive a car while on some drugs.  There are hundreds of people risking their lives riding on a jet and we don't have the right to know that our pilot is on drugs.  Worse than that, he might be in severe depression and not be allowed to take drugs.  So we get on a flight and our pilot is suicidal.  Who is responsible now ?  The co-pilot might be in the same boat (plane).  Hell, they might want to kill each other and we'd be left with nobody at the helm.  I guess what I'm saying is that the pilot should be in good shape mentally and physically, or not be entrusted with hundreds of lives!

A hard week ends...

Hard to get started today.  I guess I'm burned out from the week's anguish...  Went for a walk with Terre and Max, but Terre had an allergic reaction and broke out in hives.  We are back home now and she is recovering.

Tori and Aidan went for a bike ride (must be a holiday)!  Stay tuned for results (and blisters/sunburn) .

We are scheduled to go to a birthday party later.  We shall see what happens.

How quickly the people of Santa Ynez Valley forget about all the good fortune that the Chumash bring them.  A big deal was made that Fess Parker's estate sold them a parcel of land.  Nobody knows what they intend to do with it, and certainly if they wanted to make another casino, they would have to go through the Federal process of annexation to the Reservation.  What would REALLY be cool, is if they WOULD build another casino, and turn the current one over to the valley as a convention and event center.  I wouldn't put the Chumash beyond that generosity, as it would benefit both camps.

Those of you fueling the iPad frenzy are doing your damnedest to empower the market and eventually cause Apple to lower their prices and offer more capabilities for less.  Thank you!

I am beginning to be discouraged by the lack of comments that I get on this blog considering I know that at least ten people follow it.  Since I have a birthday this month, I will probably continue through the end of the month without encouragement- but I certainly would like to hear something!

As a new, young MD doing his residency in OB.
I was quite embarrassed when performing female
Pelvic exams... To cover my embarrassment
I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly.

The middle-aged lady upon whom I was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing And further embarrassing me.
I looked up from my work and sheepishly said...
"I'm sorry. Was I tickling you?"
She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard...

"No doctor but the song you were whistling was...
'I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener.'"

Three blondes died and found themselves standing before St. Peter. He told them that before they could enter the Kingdom of Heaven , they had to tell him what Easter was.

The first blonde said, "Easter is the holiday where they have a big feast, give thanks and eat turkey."

St. Peter rolled his eyes, said, "Blondes," and banished her to Hell.
The second blonde said, "Easter is when we celebrate the birth of Jesus and exchange gifts."
St. Peter said, "Wrong," and he banished her to Hell.
St. Peter looked at the third blonde and said, "OK ... tell me."
She said, "Easter is a Christian holiday that coincides with the Jewish festival of Passover. Jesus was having Passover feast with His disciples when he was betrayed by Judas, and the Romans arrested him. The Romans hung Him on the cross and eventually He died. Then they buried Him in a tomb behind a very large boulder."

St. Peter was impressed. "Verrrrry good," he said.
The blonde continued, "Now every year, they roll away the boulder, and Jesus comes out. If he sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of basketball."
St. Peter fainted.

Scam targeting older men

Clever Scam - taking advantage of older men

Women often receive warnings about protecting themselves at the mall and in dark parking lots, etc. This is the first warning I have seen for men. I wanted to pass it on in case you haven't heard about it.

A 'heads up' for those men who may be regular Lowe's or Home Depot customers. This one caught me by surprise.
Over the last month I became a victim of a clever scam while out shopping. Simply going out to get supplies has turned out to be quite traumatic. Don't be naive enough to think it couldn't happen to you or your friends.

Here's how the scam works:
Two seriously good-looking 20-something girls come over to your car as you are packing your shopping into the trunk. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It is impossible not to look. When you thank them and offer them a tip, they say, 'No' and instead ask you for a ride to McDonald's.

You agree and they get into the back seat. On the way, they start undressing. Then one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts crawling all over you, while the other one steals your wallet. I had my wallet stolen June 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th, 20th, 24th, & 29th. Also January 1st & 4th, twice on the 8th, 16th, 23rd, 26th & 28th, three times last Monday and very likely again this upcoming weekend.
So tell your friends to be careful. What a horrible way to take
advantage of older men.
Warn your friends to be vigilant.
Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found cheaper ones for $1.99 at Dollar General and the Dollar Store and bought them out.
Also, you never will get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth to Lowe's and Home Depot.

Progeny Makes Holiday Visit!

YAY! Tori is home for the weekend!!!  I survived the April Fool jokes undamaged.  In fact, they called me at work and said that my new computer was ready, but I thought it was a joke!

Checked out the Goleta Pier at lunch today and it was just gorgeous- not even windy!  I will have to return soon.  There were birdwatchers all about and the slough was full of interesting avian critters. Also, there were about six artists making paintings or drawings of the slough.  That was also very interesting.

This was my manager's last day as a manager, as he is going into semi-retirement and I get a new on starting next week.  Things could be very interesting....

Meanwhile I'm looking forward to the holiday weekend and then taking Tori back to school on Sunday....

Conversion table.

April Fool !!!

In Dublin, California a new call center lie detecting software called SMART Assured Self Service (SMART ASS) solution has been introduced. The new software intercepts customers who lie to call center representatives cutting down on wasted calls, man hours and overtaxed equipment.
In fact, when SMART ASS catches a customer in a lie (or call center representative) an automated voice blurts out "You can't handle the truth!" This proprietary software has saved Fortune 500 companies from across the nation hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted calls.

Well, it's been a long time coming and a lot of planning from around the world, but today at 11:59 am UTC the Internet will be rebooted. So, set your clock and reboot your system exactly on time.
If you don't do it, your ISP will do this for you. Expect your system to be down for one minute or perhaps longer. This worldwide blackout of the Internet will help restore order as many connections have gotten sluggish over time and this will aid in speeding up your connections.

In Switzerland tourism is something they take seriously along with watches, cheese and chocolate. What very few people realize is that there is a dedicated team of Swiss mountain cleaners who keep the bird poop, dirt, dust and grime off of the Alps and all of the other mountains in Switzerland.

These Swiss mountain cleaners are armed with brooms, mountain climbing equipment, water, cleaners, rope, helmets and are lead by the watchful eyes of the team leader. The mountain cleaners will scale the rocky cliffs to where the reported bird poop lay and clean it off quickly.
They may even pull out their ropes and floss a crevice or two. And upon each peak of the mountain they will pull out a ShamWow and give a good polish to the top.

In a stunning and unexpected move, American Airlines has just announced that they will replace transatlantic service from the U. S. with zero emission zeppelins. The AA zeppelins will be completely solar powered and are manufactured from recycled parts meaning a low carbon footprint as well.
The LZ-2 airships as they are being called involve 25 years of development by Boeing and its partner company. The maiden flight of the American Airlines zeppelin was from New York to Helsinki, Finland and it was made without incident.
The AA zeppelin is considered a luxury airliner as it has a restaurant, bar and 18-hole Frisbee golf course. Oh, the humanity!

Wonder where she bought that t-shirt ?

Waaaaay Interesting Day

Today was waaaaay interesting.  First it was supposed to rain, and it looked like it was going to this morning.  Then the wind kicked up and it got sunny.  Now it is getting cold again and it is supposed to hail and thundershower tonight.  Weird weather!

I must have had a standing lineup of five people that wanted a piece of me most of the day.  My time card looked like a checkerboard.  I guess Pete and I miss Mike a bit.  We certainly have way too much work for two of us.  I guess that is good in these days the way they are.  It just seems as though I couldn't get any one thing done because there were so many interruptions.  I wish it were more funny or interesting, but I am really looking forward to tomorrow- April Fool's Day!

This is a video of an act from 1944 - a sister act called the Ross Sisters.

The song they sing is about 45 seconds long but what they do next.........is amazing?

Smart Ass Answer #5:
A flight attendant was stationed at the departure gate to check tickets. As a man approached, she extended her hand for the ticket and he opened his trench coat and flashed her. Without missing a beat she said, "Sir, I need to see your ticket not your stub."

Smart Ass Answer #4:
A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but she couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy replied, "No ma'am, they're dead."

Smart Ass Answer #3:
The cop got out of his car and the kid who was stopped for speeding rolled down his window. "I've been waiting for you all day," the cop said. The kid replied, "Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could." When the cop finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a ticket.

Smart Ass Answer #2:
A truck driver was driving along the freeway. A sign comes up that reads, "Low Bridge Ahead." Before he knows it, the bridge is right ahead of him and he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks to the truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck, huh?" The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas."

Smart Ass Answer #1:
A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam. "Now class, I won't tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury or illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!" A smart ass guy in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, "What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?" The entire class is reduced to laughter and snickering. When silence is restored, the teacher smiles knowingly at the student, shakes her head and sweetly says "Well, I guess you'd have to write the exam with your other hand."

Fluctuations

I was at the bank today; there was a short line There was just one lady in front of me,an Asian lady who was trying to exchange yen for dollars. It was obvious she was a little irritated... She asked the teller, "Why it change? Yesterday, I get two hunat dolla for yen. Today I only get hunat eighty? Why it change?"

The teller shrugged his shoulders and said, "fluctuations."

The Asian lady says, "Fluc you white people too"

Still Remnants of Winter Out There

It's getting REALLY cold outside, but then we are spoiled with Spring weather here.  New England is getting flooded out with rain and more rain.  We went to take the dog for a walk and it felt like winter.  Tomorrow it is supposed to rain here.  Aren't we supposed to be getting warm rain in the Spring ?

I noticed that there are over 1100 cities and towns vying for Google's attention.  Goleta missed its chance, if it ever had one.  I sent the new with a link to Edhat, but for some reason this must be OLD NEWS so they didn't publish it.

I am getting a return chance at fighting a cold, and it is starting with a runny nose and aches.

I noticed in the news that Geely of China is in the process of buying Volvo.  I wonder what that means for Sweden and Volvo.  Will it continue to be made in Sweden with their high costs of manufacture, or be farmed out to China and then shipped back to Sweden.  Either way, it will be interesting.  I'm still waiting for Chrysler dealers to begin selling Fiats, if they can.

The Meaning of Service
At one time in my life, I thought I had a handle on the meaning of the word "service."

"It's the act of doing things for other people." Then I heard these terms which reference the word service:

Internal Revenue Service
Postal Service
Telephone Service
Civil Service
City & County Public Service
Customer Service
Service Stations

Then I became confused about the word "service." This is not what I thought "service" meant.

So today, I overheard two farmers talking, and one of them said he had hired a bull to "service" a few of his cows. Suddenly, it all came into perspective. Now I understand what all those "service" agencies are all about.

I hope you now are as enlightened as I am.

my Dog
This morning I went to sign my Dog up for welfare.

At first the lady said, "Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare".

So I explained to her that my Dog is a mix in color, unemployed, lazy, can't speak English and has no frigging clue who his Daddy is.

He expects me to feed him, provide him with housing and medical care, and feel guilty because he is a dog.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

My Dog gets his first check Friday.

Damn this is a great country.

All the things my mother taught me:
My mom taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE -
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside - I just finished cleaning!"

My mother taught me RELIGION -
"You better pray that will come out of the carpet."

My mother taught me about TIME TRAVEL:
"If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!"

My mother taught me LOGIC:
"Because I said so, that's why."

My mother taught me FORESIGHT -
"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident."

My mother taught me IRONY -
"Keep laughing and I'll *give* you something to cry out."

My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS -
"Shut your mouth and eat your supper!"

My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM -
"Will you *look* at the dirt on the back of your neck!"

My mother taught me about STAMINA -
"You'll sit there 'til all that spinach is finished."

My mother taught me about WEATHER -
"It looks as if a tornado swept through your room."

My mother taught me how to solve PHYSICS PROBLEMS -
"If I yelled because I saw a meteor coming toward you; would you listen then?"

My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY -
"If I've told you once, I've told you a million times - don't exaggerate!!!"

My mother taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE -
"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out."

My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION -
Stop acting like your father!"

My mother taught me about ENVY -
"There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do!"
